Comments about Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brakes:
This is my first hydraulic brake set used on a bicycle. In my experience with mech. disc and v-brakes, these have much more stopping power with very little effort in any weather. And take in mind I am only using 160mm rotors.
I've had the brakes for 3 months and ride my bike every other day and have yet to service them. They seem to be holding up really well.
My only complaint is you can not adjust the engagement point and if you have larger hands the lever might hit your finger before strong braking begins.

Comments about Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brakes:
Hard to know what to believe with all the mixed reviews but I've had these brakes for the last 6 months and had no issues. They mount easy and reliably stop me when I need them to. Not alot of fancy adjustments which is fine with me. If you're a regular guy/gal who just likes to ride hard and not spend hours appraising every minute detail of each part on your ride these brakes work great.

Comments about Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brakes:
I have these on my DH and DJ bikes. They are pretty good. I honestly cannot tell the difference between these and code. The price is nice. I have broken the reach adjust screw on one and ordered a replacement. Easy fix for a gnarly crash. No complaints really.

Comments about Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brakes:
From what I've heard and read, Elixirs are either a hit or a miss. I guess I've been lucky. I have two sets of the Fives. One on my Enduro that I've been using for 3 years, which prompted me to get another pair for my DH/Freeride bike. Cut and bled the rear, used the front right out of the box. I've never had any problems with them. Crashed and smashed my levers on rocks, and they're still working. No leaks, no fade. Maybe it helps that I'm using 8-inch rotors. Certainly worth the price I paid for them.

Comments about Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brakes:
I have these elixirs two bikes. My hardtail 29er has been working flawlessly with this system. It has nice power, it slows you down. What else do you want. The pair on my dirt jumpers however have been finicky. Development of air in the hose is not uncommon. Loss of power can be felt in the lever in times of heavy use or un-level bike orientation. Don't get me wrong, these brakes will work and are good for intended purposes, but I feel there are better options out there. (xt brakes)
Comments about Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brakes:
I assumed after the first set that I must have a bad set of brakes from the factory. Numerous shop techs agreed. Avid did warranty the original set, but the new ones have performed exactly like the others. I don't know how air gets into these things so easily. I generally ride smooth trails without big, steep downhills and over the course of one or two rides these things are downright dangerous, engaging sometimes and almost not at all other times depending on what type of bump I hit I guess. 6 bleeds by 3 different shops. Are all the techs doing it wrong? Doubt it. I believe these should be subject to a safety recall. I will say that the Avid RSLC's on my wife's bike seem very good. They have a different level, so I guess the problem is in the Elixir 5 lever.

Comments about Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brakes:
haven't installed these yet but expect they will be good like my trusty juicy 5's. what i wanted to help by saying is that the pads are included in the box and the front brake comes with 20 mm PM (post-mount) adaptor so you don't need to buy separately. I also like it that rotors are included so you don't need to buy many parts like with shimano
