Buy the 7's instead.
These levers will do the job - barely - but they have virtually no adjustability, and compared to Avid's 7 lever... there is NO comparison. They have a mushy feel and weak power transfer against what the 7 accomplishes. If you're on the fence, spend another $7.00 and get the "7" lever; they are superior in every way to the 5.

They're OK, but...
They're OK, but they're not great. They're cheaply made, and it's obvious when the levers start rattling in the holders. If you want levers with limited adjustability that are cheap, and will pull cable - get these. I would personally spring for the AVID SD-7's.

So far so good
So far so good. Replaced the cheap plastic ones that came on my sons bike. These look like they should hold up a lot better.

great basic brake levers
I converted a road bike with drop bars and brifters to a flatbar road bike for my daugher. The dropbar bike had her too stretched out and it hurt her back. These brake levers were one of the many changes I did, and she is now delighted with the "new" bike. No more back aches.

Nice, cheap, and get the job done
Used on a budget build. If you install your brakes correctly than speed dials aren't necessary. These work great for half the price

Good basic levers
I bought these to replace the levers on a bike I was fixing for my daughter. These were easy to install and they work flawlessly. My daughter is not big, but she has no issues using the levers. Easy to adjust and built to work.

I like them more...
I like them more everytime I use them. I was a little skeptical at first after reading other's reviews, I didn't really belive that a lever would actually make a big difference. But everyone seemed to like them so I thought I'd give them a try. I am 100% satisfied. I had hydralics on my front but I had to put back on my stock hayes because I bought a manitou fork and didn't have an adapter and I am so satisfied with these levers that I don't think I am going to go back to hydralics, these are just way too smooth.

are the barrel adjusters made of metal?
Frankie on Oct 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes they are metal. I've been using these and the fr7 levers for years. I like the fr5 much better. I actually replaced the fr7 on some bikes with the fr5 .Hope that helps.

Are they working with Avid BB7 Road ?
Jayjay on Dec 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: They will work but not at 100% efficiency. Avid FR-5 brake levers are designed to work with mountain bike brakes. It would be better to either get BB7 MTB brakes or flat bar road levers instead. That said I was able to get a similar set up working pretty well by moving the pads a little further away from the rotors to compensate.
Do these work as interrupter brakes with drop bars?
Daniel on Jul 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, you cannot run the brake cable through the levers like you can on interrupter/cross brake levers.

You would need something like this: http://www.jensonusa.com/Cane-Creek-Crosstop-Levers?cs=Black
Do these levers work with cantilever brakes for a surly cross check? I read somewhere that they are not compatible with cantilevers, but unsure why it would make a difference..

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks
Kickin Wayne on Apr 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Wayne, these levers are not compatible with cantilever brakes. Cantilever brakes have a different cable pull than linear pull brakes and mechanical disc brakes. Cantilevers require what is called a "short-pull" brake lever, while linear pull and mechanical disc brakes require a long-pull brake lever like the Avid FR-5.

A good option for cantilevers in the same price range are the Shimano R550 Levers:
