Current new, retail boxed BB7 brakes come packaged with BOTH front and rear adapters supplied by Avid. If a competitor is selling you a "front" or a "rear", you arent getting what should be included with this item.

The Avid BB7 has set the standard for mechanical disc brakes for years. Avids CPS (caliper positioning system, included) continues to make setup and adjustment a snap.
  • Will fit front 74mm post mount, 51mm IS front or 51mm IS (includes adapters to fit these applications)
  • Each kit includes 1 caliper, 6-bolt rotor, mounting hardware, and adapters (one brake). Order a qty of "2" if you need brakes for a complete bicycle
  • Brakes supplied with a 160mm rotor will also include a front and rear 51mm IS adapter to match the rotor size.
  • Works with any linear pull brake lever, including Avid and others (lever and cable are not included)
  • Weight: 380 grams (capiler, 6" adapter, rotor, hardware)

I bought these brakes to replace a couple of V-brakes I had on my mountain bike. The installation seemed easy enough on the manual, and I followed the instructions step by step, but the rotors kept on rubbing on the pads. I tried to make adjustments but it was impossible. Come to find out, the rotor came bent, so it didn't matter how straight I got the brake, the rotor would still rub. This also prevented me from adjusting the pads as close to the rotor was possible.
I tried to ignore the rubbing and got the pads as close to the rotor as possible, but even this would not give me enough stopping power. The V-brakes I had before had more stopping power. These aren't good brakes, and the rotor for the front I ordered was defective.

Comments about Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake 2011:

Use a high end avid lever , or an xtr .
Learn how to set up correctly .
Use best quality compression less housing.
I'm very familiar with these. Excellent performance for the price. Simple set up, easy maint.
I value modulation most , and I get it with ultimate speed dial levers.
These are being used on a rigid hard tail singlespeed. I've used them on full suspension , and I don't recommend them for that application.

Comments about Avid BB7 Mechanical Disc Brake 2011:

Kit provides all the little bits to get the brakes on properly. I went with 200mm rotors on the front and rear which helps the stopping power. The bike stops on a dime. I've wired the breaks to avid speed adjust levers which really help dial in the grab.

Upgraded from stock disc brake on Jamis X2 - front only. The stock ones were making too much noise no matter how much I cleaned or adjusted.

BB7 was easy to install, and after some adjustments, it feels great and the noise is gone.

This product was easy to install and has great stopping power. I use this brake in the front only and have a v-brake in the rear on my cross country bike. I haven't had any issues with squeeling using the stock pads. I've only used this brake on dry Southern California trails.
