After years of coveting a Brooks saddle I finally decided to purchase one for my retro BSA racer. Brooks have a massive selection of saddles on their website and choosing one is a challenging (you have the choice of Select, Special, Unique, Classic, Imperial and Aged ranges) but ultimately enjoyable experience. I decided to plump for a special fast touring model. Not too skinny as I don't race competitively and not too wide or with springs as mine is not a sit up and beg 'Dutch' style bike.

On my first ride I instantly felt an improvement on comfort over my last saddle. I think this was partly due to the shape but mostly I believe to the absorption of bumps and extra width. I did get some wear on the inside right leg seam of several of my shorts. This could be due to the low leather sides of the saddle or more likely my riding technique and saddle position.

Although it is not a light saddle and may not appeal to the weight conscious racer I feel the trade off between comfort and weight is very justifiable as the saddle is one of the main connection points between rider and bicycle. A good saddle is the difference between an enjoyable day on your bike and a painful one. If you enjoy the day more, then that'll make you ride more…

In Summary - 'OK, now, after 3 months of using a Brooks saddle, I totally get why people swear by them. The hand-moulded leather sits on a chassis frame that runs from the front to the back of the saddle. What this means is the saddle is allowed to mould itself to the rider over time and has a level of spring that partially absorbs some of the road vibrations. Nearly all other makes of saddle have leather and/or synthetic uppers that are stuck to a rigid plastic lower. There maybe some form of padding between the upper and lower but ultimately there is little or no give in terms of the whole saddle. Brooks saddles are different from this.

I'm still breaking in the saddle after applying some Brooks Proofide to the underside. They do say that it can take a couple of thousand miles before it begins to mould itself to the rider. I can understand this due to the thickness of the hide. A good quality rugged pair of hiking boots will take longer to break in than a not so good pair, so it makes sense that the same should apply to a leather saddle. I do think though that the more sit-up-and-beg models will break in quicker simply because more of the riders body weight is further back and thus pressing down.

I have ridden on more than a handful of different saddles over the years and can honestly say that this is the best yet.'

Yes. It is comfortable.

But not at first. Only after you slowly and painfully break it in. Which means you will never truly appreciate how comfortable it is. Until you try to go back to a lighter, more contemporary saddle.

So it's almost anti-uncomfortable. Don't ride a double-negative.

      Comments about Brooks B17 Saddle:

Everyone in my family has Brooks saddles. We all love them. There can be a break-in period (roughly 500 miles) - this is the first time I felt that was true. Two other Brooks saddles I have personally owned, and those of my wife and daughters, did not require a break-in period to be comfortable.

      Comments about Brooks B17 Saddle:

There are lots of great saddles out there, but I would never give up my brooks B17. I run one on my road bike and it's properly broken in and by far the most comfortable saddle I own.

      Comments about Brooks B17 Saddle:

This is a review for the B17 Special (the one w/ copper rivets). It's a beautiful saddle--truely a work of art. It takes a while for the leather to break in, but once it does you can ride all day with no discomfort. It's worth the time investment. Plus it's a beautiful piece of work (did I mention that yet?).

          Comments about Brooks B17 Saddle:

Although this Brooks model is reasonably comfortable on the first ride, it takes quite a while to break in. This is my first Brooks experience, and after close to 1,000 miles, I'm still waiting for the magic. I'm not at all unhappy, but not gushing with joy either. I did a 4 day, nearly 300 mile touring ride and this thing was better than my other standard road saddle, but I was still hoping for more.

Several friends have the B17 in black, and apparently the leather in that model breaks in much quicker. If you're going to invest in Brooks quality, spend a touch more and get the softer leather.

Best saddle on the market for touring, radonneuring and every day use.
Very comfortable and easy to break in. I own four of these and will oder another for my new folder.
The only downside is that their made of full grain leather and need to be protected from the rain.

There is NO BLOB OF PLASTIC out there that will give you the long term comfort one of these will.
It WILL break into your posterior if you ride it properly and long enough. And you will either love it, or hate it. The ones like me, who love it, have a Brooks on all our bikes, and would accept no other.
The way you mountain bikers ride, it may not be best for your rigs. It's not totally waterproof. But if uou want all day comfort, look no further.
