Continental Mountain King II Tubeless 29

The Mountain King II is now in its second reign, strengthening its rule over the trail bike scene. The shoulder lugs have been beefed up, creating more space between the center and side lugs to shed mud for better grip, especially when flying into a turn. The Mountain King II provides plenty of traction for various terrains from muddy to loose over hard packed, and can be run on the front, rear, or both. This version of the Mountain King II features Continental’s ProTection-RTR casing which increases sidewall protection while also providing a UST compatible Revolution Tubeless Ready bead. The Mountain King II has once again claimed its throne as a serious all-condition tire!

In 2007, Black Chili compound hit the market. It has been a hit with cyclists ever since, as it has proven to improve tire performance in all areas. The BlackChili compound lasts longer, grips better, and rolls faster. It has 26% less rolling resistance, 30% higher grip, and even 5% longer mileage. The Black Chili Compound is only made in Korbach Germany, and the recipe is not shared with any other tire manufacturer.

The Revolution Tubeless Ready system provides the perfect combination of smooth running, grip, and puncture protection. ProTection RTR features 4 ply heavy duty nylon (4 under tread, 3 in the sidewall.) The Revolution Tubeless Ready (RTR) system offers a UST style bead, and mid-weight casing for full tubeless compatibility. For optimal results, Continental recommends using the Continental RevoSealant with these tires.

Note: If Stan's was previously used, both the tire and rim must be scrubbed using Simple Green or a similar cleaner, before Continental Revo Sealant can be used.

Very easy to set up tubeless on Haven rims and have not burped even once. Very tough tire, sidewalls are bulletproof. Lots of sharp granite here in RI and even though the sidewalls are worn heavily they have not torn or leaked a bit. The tread is not as durable though and knobs tend to disintegrate rather than slowly wear down.

The price for the tough sidewall is a fairly heavy tire at 780 for the 2.4" and 760 for the 2.2'. On Haven rims the 2.2" measured 2.1" and the 2.4" measured 2.3" so not too far off and the 2.4" has a lot of volume. I use these for most of my riding when I would rather have durability over weight and throw on a set of lighter tires when speed is a concern.

The 29inch 2.4" actually measures 2.2" wide. My Niner RIP 9 came with RacingRalphs and I bought the MountainKings because I prefer to run fatter tires with lower pressures. The Kings are no wider than the Ralphs. Now I have 2 sets of 'skinny' tires. If you want to go fat on your 29'er, these tires won't do it.

3 tries to set up tubeless at local shop - deflate ON - sidewall pinhole leaks that wont seal - used the Continental sealant - not really tubeless ready

Comments about Continental Mountain King II 29" Pro:

This tire is way too narrow for a 2.4 size rating. I didn't even bother taking it out of it's packaging. My existing 2.3 Bontragers are way wider than these tires.

Comments about Continental Mountain King II 29" Pro:

As a competitive Single speed endurance racer I love these tires because they handle everything I can throw at them. This is my second set the first seeing me to the podium on a variety courses. From super rocky, muddy to down right dirty fast these tires seem to always find grip even when standing and putting the hammer down. I flatted once with the previous pair due to too low of air pressure and pinching on a root. I love these tires.

I replaced the front tire on my GT Zaskar (Maxxis Aspen) with this tire. A huge improvement in grip, especially in loose terrain. Cornering improved as well, I have much more confidence in my front tire now. I'm considering one for the rear tire as well.

Comments about Continental Mountain King II 29" Pro:

I just want to update my last review about this tire... I can tell you that it is a very good one. I just ran my first race with it.. and I don´t have any complain as a Front tire use. I feel very safe with it. In my first race I finish 11th from a group of 30 competitors, I ran smoothly becuase I objetive was finishing the race even doe I could ran faster... but been my first race want to know .. what it feels to race and and compare my performance to more experienced people. This tire allow me to down very safely in places where it was loose even doe where were curves... very confident, very good handling, very good treadwear.. it is almost intact..

Like other poster, I was completely disappointed in the size of this tire. My Specialized "The Captain" 2.2's are significantly larger than the Mountain King 2.4. Plus The Captain's have a bigger and better ground footprint to-boot.
