After jealously watching my brother tow all kinds of gear on several adventure tours over the past couple years, I gave in and purchased my own BOB Yak 28.
Two tours (on and off-road) and many trips to the grocery and hardware stores later, I am more than impressed. The week after I purchased it, it was dragged behind me on the Kokopelli Trail. It performed rather well, except for the narrowest, windiest single track, where it would occasionally scrape rocks or bushes after my bike and I had cleared them. Hike-a-bike is also more difficult when loaded, but the option to disconnect and haul trailer and bike separately makes the experience comparable to, if not easier than using racks and panniers front and back.
On the road, it performs marvelously. Your turning radius increases, and on a lightweight road bike, be careful the first few times you decide to stand up while pedaling. Other than these two factors, you might forget it's behind you.
The tire is of good quality, and the frame is well-braced and sturdy. The dry bag that comes with the trailer is specially sized and can fit a good amount of gear in a rugged, waterproof way. The Bungee cords included have coverings over the hooks to protect the bag and other gear. Assembly was straightforward and required only a few basic tools.
Being an engineer, I have high standards for the design of my gear. My favorite feature has to be the attachment system. While sufficiently sturdy, attaching the trailer is about as easy as putting a front wheel into a quick release and takes about 15 seconds. This means it's on your mountain bike, or your road bike, or your commuter when you want it, and not when you don't. I have a feeling my Xtracycle will start accumulating dust.
