Camelbak Palos 4 LR Pack 2016

CamelBak Palos 4 LR Pack

We all know that besides the obvious practicality of using a backpack style hydration pack, they also simply look cooler in all of our pictures from the trail. However, there has been an undeniable resurgence in the fanny pack cool factor. Cool or not, maybe you prefer not to carry a full backpack for shorter rides, but still need more than a water bottle. This is where the CamelBak Palos pack comes into play.

The Palos™ 4 is a reservoir-based waist pack designed specifically for mountain biking. It’s the ideal option for gritty riders who need more than a water bottle, but who don’t want to carry a full-fledged backpack. As part of CamelBak’s Low Rider MTB collection, the Palos anchors your H2O and cargo around your waist, offering a better center of gravity and leaving your shoulders and back liberated for a more natural range of motion. Also, no longer will you have to deal with an uncomfortable sweaty back.

Additionally, the Palos includes a 1.5-liter reservoir, storage for keys and a phone, an integrated tool roll to keep you prepped for mid-ride repairs, and overflow storage that lets you fasten soft armor to the outside of the pack.

If you weren’t on the fanny pack wagon before, we bet you are now.

Key Pack Features:

  • Integrated tool organizer, lumbar compression, magnetic tube trap, dual waist belt pockets, secured zipper pocket, zippered essentials pocket, air mesh back panel, blinker tab

Designed to Carry:

  • Multi-tool, CO2 pump and cartridges, spare tube, energy bar, phone, keys

Specifications:

  • Total Capacity: 244 cu in / 2.5L + 1.5L reservoir
  • Pack-Only Weight: 1 lb. 7 oz. / 0.64 kg
  • Torso Length: N/A
  • Back Panel: Air mesh
  • Belt: Fixed 38MM / 1.5" with cargo pockets

Great option for shorter rides
After several rides, I'm loving this Camelbak. I wanted a hydration bladder that wouldn't cause backaches on mountain bike rides. This one is perfect. The weight is kept low on my back and it's very stable; the pack position gives you more freedom and maneuverability on the bike. The bladder size is on the small side but it works for most of the 2-3 hour rides I do. Space for gear is small too -- room for keys, bike toolkit, credit cards, a couple bars, and maybe an extra layer. It's all I need on my rides. The bladder hose connects via magnet to the pack, and while that takes some getting used to, it does work. The only negative is that the hose and bite valve is down at your waist, not pinned up near your chest like with a traditional pack, so taking a drink while riding technical terrain is not as easy. If there were a way to pin the hose to your shirt, that would fix the issue.

Needs improvements
Was really wanting this to work out for smaller rides., but like other reviews from other sites, the waist would loosen causing it to fall lower then it should. With a seat dropped on decents, I heard it touch the tire a couple times. The storage area was great and I didn't give the magnetic tube attachment difficult at all. This could be an awesome option I believe with some redesign or adding optional minimalistic shoulder straps/ suspenders. Long story short, sold it, and picked up a skyline.

PROS: Perfect size for short rides

CONS: Unstable

Well thought out and very functional
I had to stop wearing my backpack style camelback for medical reasons so I gave this a try. It holds up to 1.5 liters of water and has tons of room to store gear and food. I'm very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a alternative way to get water.

Love it!
I paddle canoe, and the backpack doesn't work for me. This is really comfortable to wear while paddling and works great so far!

I bought this because I was fed up with the backpack hydration in the heat. This is much cooler and very comfortable! Still a lot of space to take things along on the ride as well as a good amount of water.

Awesome
I was definitely a fanny pack skeptic but when i saw this one on sale i figured id give it a shot. Im a believer now and am kicking myself for have waited so long. Dont even notice it on the downhills, notice it sometimes climbing but its not bad. Thought the strap might be uncomfortable on my stomach but its somehow not at all.

Great concept and excellent quality.
I've just used it for one ride that was two hours long, but it definitely lived up to expectations. I found the magnetic valve easy to take, though I will need more practice to get it where it returns to without looking at it.

The pack felt comfortable around my hips and didn't bounce around. I eventually felt like the straps were a bit loose, but that could be due to several different reasons, like a material that gets longer when wet, a break in period... In any case, it wasn't loose enough to be bothersome, so I'm happy.

First test on durability was passed successfully! I fell at a fair speed on the trail and landed on my right side on dirt and some rocks. The pack picked up a good amount of dirt, but showed no signs of damage upon inspection once I washed it at home.

The difference this made in comparison to my normal pack was noticeable! Much less restricting for my movements, and my back was thankful for the extra ventilation. I didn't feel like it made my hips any hotter than my normal pack, which has both shoulder and hip straps.

Calbak Palos 4
First ride with the Camelbak Palos 4 today, temperature was in the 90s and love'd it. I feel so free not even notice I have anything on the DH but feel tight a little on my tummy on the climb but got use to it quickly. I don't know if I ever go back to backpack style again especially for short ride.

Does this come with a water bladder?
RbrtWbr on Apr 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes!
Can you fit a spare tube in this?
Chris G on Jul 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I have a 27.5 tube in there along with quite bit of other tools, medicine containers, bandages, etc. The thing that is most difficult to help alleviate space is the air in the bladder. The bladder is tough to get in when it is full otherwise it has plenty of space unless you have a ton of stuff.
Does this have the magnetic hose retention? Are there any differences other than colour to the latest model?
A shopper on Aug 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does have the magnetic Fidlock hose connection. I am not completely familiar with the new version. I have been very happy with this pack though and have used it on much longer rides than I was expecting.
