I use Clif Shot during Iroman events and workouts lasting two plus hours. I don't follow a specific pattern (ie 2 per hour). Instead I wait until I feel like I need it before I eat a packet. I'm able to utilize the product in this way because it works so quickly, usually about 10-15 minutes. Being able to use the product in this way is a great benifit because it prevents me from overdosing.....the only negative is that I'd like to be able to purchase more than one flavor per box (ie 12 mocha and 12 expresso).

I'll use Clif gels if I can't find any GU around.
I find them a bit too runny for my taste.
The flavors, while mostly organic and "natural," tend to be abrasive. The berry flavor is overly tart. The chocolate flavor tastes dry, almost like baking chocolate.
If you stash your used gel packs in the rear of your jersey, be warned. I've had a few instances of left-over Clif gel leaking all over the jersey pockets. GU doesn't seem to do that.

I love these 'cause I can get w/100mg caffeine! You have to be OK w/the espresso flavor, but I'm a coffee lover so I don't mind. To me, you can't expect great flavor in any of these things anyway, so I just kinda suck it up when comes to using them. I just look for the right mix of ingredients, and if it tastes good, that's a bonus! I ride at least 100mi/wk (xc mtn biking) AND race whenever I can (5+ per year). The litter leash is a nice touch also, as I'm not one of these morons who don't care if they give us bikers a bad name by throwing their trash all over the place.

I used it 15 min before activity. In 5K one before the race and one at the end of race to recover. In 10K one before, one at the middle and one at the end to recover. And in MTB one before activity and then one shot per hour. This help me very much.
