I would love to ride my Trek Madone with its Shimano 105 SPD-SL pedals full-time. Alas, my age has caught up with me...I am no longer agile enough to unclip fast enough on busy local streets. After one-too-many painful and embarrassing falls it was clearly time for a change. With the A530s I can still clip-in on long, unobstructed rides and use the platform side on stop-and-go city streets. I'm using the A530s on my Trek 7500 Hybrid as well.

I bought these pedals for my commuter, and I'm happy to have the option to ride clipless or with street shoes. That said, I wouldn't necessarily call these pedals the best of both worlds, as the platform side is barely grippy enough. Some commenters mentioned struggling to find the right side of the pedal, however I felt like this was not a problem, as my feet could feel whether I was on the right side. If you lift the foot off the upside-down pedal, the rotation of the cranks will flip the pedal for you, and when you put your foot back down, it will be right-side-up! Granted, it is another thing to think about, but you don't need to take your eyes off the road. I wouldn't tell anyone to stay away from these, but I have my eye on pedals with more grip on the platform side if I were to get this kind again.

        • Commuting

        Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

I've only used these pedals for about 50 miles so far commuting, so I have gotten a chance to clip in and out fairly frequently with them but more riding may be required for a complete review.

        Clip In Side:
Very secure feeling once clipped in
Gives a solid "click!" sound so you know you're attached
Easily adjustable tension. I've never adjusted tension in pedals before and these were easy to change even without reading the instructions.

        Platform Side:
I haven't had the chance to use this side extensively. Puttering around the neighborhood in flip flops with no tread didn't seem to have any slippage issues as you read from reviews elsewhere.
The black finish scratches very easily if you accidentally try to clip into the platform side.

          Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

Fantastic combo pedals for the casual - intermediate rider that wants to be able to not clip in from time to time. I debated and studied for a long time to get these. Glad I did. For the price they were the right fit. They work well and are not heavy, at least not for a recreational rider like myself. I enjoy being able to put on my sneakers and go for a short ride to the store as well as clip in for a nice trail. Great buy.

            Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

Currently using the pedals on the cross-country trip. The pedals are working great. They might be a tad heavy, but that probably ads durability. Unfortunately, the paint gets pretty beat up from cleats.

Good for both purposes, the platform is a bit slippery but it beats the fact you can also go clipless if you desire so.

                    Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

This is my second set. I bought the first set for an old touring bike, and liked them so much that the choice was easy when I recently purchased a new carbon fiber road bike. I was glad to find them offered in black with Jenson; not all retailers carry both colors. These pedals are very easy to clip into and offer the ability to safely pedal without clipping in. Great value!
