A Ferrari Reshaped As a Bike
You probably know your fair share of cyclists who never fail to gush about how weight and aerodynamic properties aren't of any importance to them, and how they ride for fun to fight off the donut and beer weight. Now that's all fine and dandy, but you'd be lying if you said that a small part of you hears this as an excuse to be lazy. You give them their credit for getting out and riding, but for you riding means something a bit more. There's just some things you can't shrug off when it comes to the performance of your bike. Some may call it "snobbery" and some may call it "elitist." You call it instinct. You don't let the down talk swing your standards for an uncompromised weight-to-performance ratio. You gush over just the kind of particularity and pioneering that can be found in the Colnago V1-R Disc.
Working in cooperation with Italian luxury sports car manufacturer, Ferrari, Colnago selected the highest quality carbon fiber to construct a monocoque frame that prides itself on aerodynamic talent. All of the V1-R's tubes, including the fork blades and the seat stays, have a special shape that's been optimized in the wind tunnel to ensure the most aero-friendly lines in all directions, while still achieving flexural and torsional rigidity that many aero bikes lack. Additionally, the V1-R Disc frame comes with a dedicated seatpost which ensures its aero design doesn't stop at the seatpost collar, but extends all the way to the saddle.
At first, the concept of road bikes adopting disc brakes was highly scoffed at by traditionalists and riders skeptical of gimmickry. This concept has only been around a few years now, and has certainly come along ways since its initial entrance. This is a concept that many riders and manufacturers alike wholeheartedly believe as the future of road bikes. Why not? More stopping power for a negligible weight penalty. Colnago has seen this light and has modified their V1-R frame to work with disc brakes.
What does this mean exactly? Turning our attention to the fork, the Manitou pioneered Hexlock15 thru-axle quick-release system is not only quick and easy to use, but it has permitted Colnago the freedom to maintain thin fork blades for a more aero friendly design that doesn't forgo stiffness and also provides a firmer hold of the wheel. Looking to the full carbon rear dropouts, the brake uniquely mounts one post to the chainstay and the other to an external tab that self-centers with the placement of the rear wheel. Not only is this lighter, more laterally stiff, but it's a breeze to install and adjust the rear caliper.
By the way, the V1-R Disc features internal cable routing that can run either standard mechanical or Di2 electronic shifting and is also compatible with a seat tube battery. Options don't stop there. As a disc specific frame, the brakes can be set up either as hydraulic or mechanical.
Knowing that bottom brackets can be a fickle subject, Colnago said the heck with it and introduced the Threadfit82.5 patented proprietary standard which delivers the reliability and practicality of a threaded bottom bracket (BSA), and the width and rigidity of a standard press-fit. Furthermore, the Threadfit82.5 bottom bracket offers compatibility with all the Pressfit 86.5 BB versions.
