Mythology depicts the ogre as a creature of hideous proportions. A mutated humanoid possessing murderous strength and power. The kind of brute with no purpose but to crush and smash and crush some more. Thankfully for the modern world, Surly ignored all the more horrifying parts of the legend and has harnessed its most useful attributes with the rugged, Swiss-army-knife that is the Ogre. Building on the legacy of its 26" wheel little brother, the Troll, the Ogre is primed to adapt to whatever sort of riding comes its way.
Built from sturdy double-butted 4130 CroMoly steel, the TIG welded frame is based on the tried-and-true geomety of the revered Karate Monkey. The fork is Surly's suspension-corrected (80mm) design with a tapered and butted blade. Ample room between the stays allows the use of high-volume tires up to 29 x 2.5", and full-length Surly Trip Guides keep brake and derailleur housing organized. The frame has both disc and cantilever brake mounts, giving you the freedom to choose a system that best suits your stopping needs. If you need to attach something to the frame, the Ogre probably has a mount for it. This highly functional bike features: Three sets of bottle cage mounts; removable post cantilever pivots; upper seatstay threaded barrels, mid and low-blade fully threaded through-blade fork eyelets; threaded holes for racks, fenders and trailer mounting nuts; and a Rohloff OEM2 axle plate mounting slot.
Not just a sturdy frame with plenty of braze-ons for mounting
Ogre welcomes a slew of options for drivetrain functionality as well.
The frame is spaced for 135mm hubs, and uses the same rear-loading
horizontal dropouts as the Troll. The dropouts feature a derailleur
hanger, slotted disc brake mounts, M10 x 1mm threaded holes for
mounting Surly Bill & Ted trailer-connecting hardware (or B.O.B.
Nutz), and a dedicated anchoring point for a Rohloff OEM2 axle plate.
Surly designed plenty of versatility into the dropouts so you can run a
singlespeed, internally geared hub or full derailleur drivetrain, with
disc or rim brakes, with or without racks and fenders, with new or
older parts, whatever best serves you. This complete bike comes
standard with a Shimano Deore 3x9 drivetrain and an Avid BB7 mechanical
disc brake system (detailed specifications below).
Though it was originally designed to be a do-anything touring rig, the Ogre is equally at home on a run around the local singletrack, a commute to the office, an overnight ramble, or a fully loaded tour deep into a network of mountain fire roads. With such versatility at your fingertips the question remains: How will you harness the power of the Ogre?
