Continental Speedride 700C Tire

Continental Speedride 700CX42 Tire

There are untold numbers of ways you can use the Continental Speedride 700CX42 Tire. Throw it on your cyclocross bike for the summer, or on your gravel bike for all the time, or even on your city bike for comfort. Your call. But with the file tread design on the center, and larger knobs on the side, they will certainly hold up on both paved and unpaved surfaces, and hold their own pretty well even the trail gets a bit looser. They are not designed for crazy off road use or aggressive trails, but are certainly your do-all tire regardless.

Nice gravel tire
I went FS for my mountain bike swapping the fork on my HT for a rigid fork and added these tires to make it a gravel bike. Lots of fun, and I needed the lower gears for the hills we have around here (I mean I really need those gears...really). Of course nothing does great in gravel, its like riding on ball bearings, but I am satisfied. Great on pavement, does OK in hard dirt, too.

Great tire.
Great tire for the money. Not actually 42 mm wide, measures more like 38-39. Was afraid would be slightly too big for my road rims but they are fine, not squirelly, even at lower pressures. Running these on my cross bike for gravel rides and ultralight on/off touring.

Great performer and value
Rolls well on pavement, great on gravel and dirt, 420 grams, flat protection, goes tubeless, great size for fitting cross frames and $15 bucks. What more do you want

Best multi-purpose tire out there
Great tire for smooth gravel, dirt, logging roads/trails. Light, large volume and fast rolling.

Fast with a little grip
These have been awesome on my CX bike for groad riding. They roll well, absorb bumps nicely, and arent too sketchy on loose/wet gravel and I occasionally go on the trails with them.

Nice lightweight and fast rolling tire. Plenty of grip in the dry dirt and grass for commuting.

Excellent general purpose tires!
I favor file-tread patterns like this tire has for most general use purposes (obviously not including mud); they're smooth enough for an enjoyable and quiet ride on pavement, and they're also just "tready" enough to do well in mild loose material (like dirt/gravel roads, general two-track use, etc). I'm not a cyclocrosser, but tires like this generally fit my general use pattern.

I have a Trek Verve 3, which came with 700x35 tires that inflate up to only about 33mm wide and about 31mm tall (from the edge of the rim). I generally prefer a little more volume than that. Trek advises that a 38mm tire is the largest they recommend. These Continentals are nominally 700x42, but they air up to about 38-39mm, perfect for my application. I could probably force-fit a 40mm tire on it, but that would be pushing it, both in terms of frame clearance and rim width (16mm inside width on the stock Bontrager AT-750 rims). So, by size, these tires are perfect for me. They mounted easily (this is the first folding bead tire I've had, and they were a cinch to install). I also liked how thin the casing is on this tire. I'm pretty careful where and how I ride, and I'm not prone to flatting. Rather than super thick "bombproof" touring tires that ride more like wooden hoops (like a Marathon or similar), I prefer a tire with a thinner casing for a more supple ride while still using a conventional rubber tube.

On the road and trail, they're wonderful. I weigh about 235 pounds, and keep these inflated to about 45 psi in the front and 55 psi in the rear. This is enough air to keep them from pinch-flatting on gravel/tree roots/manhole covers while also delivering a comfortable ride and good contact patch for traction. I'm not a fan of inflating pneumatic tires so high that you might as well be using a solid tire -- I like a little more compliance for ride comfort and conformance to the surface for traction.

Aesthetically, the tire looks great. The sidewalls have a very clean look to them and the Continental logo stampings are classy and subtle.

These tires are a great buy!

great gravel tire
Ive tried a ton of gravel tires and this one is as good, or better than any. Roles fast, comfortable, pretty durable, light. $70 "gravel specific" tires offer no advantages.

Great multipurpose tires
I've only had this tire for about a week but so far I've had it on the road for about 40 miles and gravel/dirt/mixed trail for about 40 miles. It rolls fast on the street and rolls great off road in hard and crushed as well. Not much difference in speed on the transition between the two either. I am still trying different pressures but so far 55-60 on the street and 40-45 off road seems like a good combination for me. My bike and I are tipping about 220 and when I have to really put down the power while standing on really steep uphills, I can feel them compressing on the pedal strokes @ 40 psi, the goodpart of that is they do soften the rough ride a bit. No wet off road or much loose over hard yet to compare. Just a few spots with mud and well.. it's not a mud tire. On 23mm inside rim, it comes out to just about 40mm width at 55psi so a little smaller than advertised. I can't speak for the flat resistance or the wear with only 80 miles on them. This tire was exactly what I was looking for.

Greetings, can anyone please give me a mounted tire/ tread width? I'm running a 32cc street tire and have concerns about the 42cc width fitting my fork. Thank you

BEST ANSWER: I would suggest measuring the distance between the tubes. I ride a Surly Straggler and have plenty of room.
I currently have a 700cX45 tire on my commuter bike, will 700cX42 be compatible? In other words, will they fit on my current wheels?
deedles722 on Mar 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they will fit. 700 is the "series" of wheel size in terms of diamter (it's actually 622mm in diameter) and 45 is the nominal width of the tire mounted on the wheel. Tires often don't measure out to their nominal width. It's possible that your 45mm wide tire is actually a hair wider than 45mm, or even narrower than 45mm. Look closer at your current tires -- they should say 45-622 on them somewhere...45mm for the width and 622mm for the wheel diameter,

The nominal size of the Speedride is 42-622, which means it's supposed to be 42mm wide. Mine inflate up to about 38mm wide at 50psi. If I put 70-80 psi in them, they're closer to 39mm wide.

They should absolutely fit your wheels, but they will likely be somewhat narrower than your current tires.
