When I first started mountain biking, I tried the eggbeater 2 and ended up returning them. I had difficulty getting clipped in and lead to a few crashes on the trail. I decided to try these as it was time to replace my road bike peddles and with quite a few bikes in my fleet, I was looking for an all around solution. From the very first ride, I just loved these peddles. No issues clipping in or out. I think the platform really helps. As a side benefit, I have had absolutely no hot foot issues. I have since put them on my road and mountain bikes and not looking back. I can wear my mountain shoe and no more clunking around with road shoes and cleets. Durability is yet to be seen. But with the rebuild kit available, I don't see that as a problem. I think Crank Bros finally got them right at a decent price point.

While these pedals work well -- they shed mud; provide reliable entry and release; and are well made -- the cleat interface is terrible.
If not perfectly set up, the "eggbeater" section of the pedal will gouge the area of the shoe above and below the cleat. This is a real problem with carbon soled shoes. Crank Brothers has attempted to solve the issue with steel sole protectors and a series of shims. Neither of which should really be necessary.
I've found these pedals to be vastly superior to Shimano as far as mud shedding is concerned (I've raced them for two seasons because of this), but remain attracted to Shimano's cleat interface.
I should really get a pair of Time's and call it a day...

I'm on my third season with a set of Candy 3 pedals. I have dissambled and greased them a few times but other than that they have been flawless. They have taken many hits on rocks and roots and never broken or let me down. I think I have come unclipped from a hit twice. They work very well in the mud and snow too. I plan to put a rebuild kit in them and keep using them.

One of the single best items/upgrades I've ever added, Crank brothers hit the nail on the head dead center with these, just like all their other products these are incredibly tough, well designed and fully functional while being simple enough to maintain and really not requiring much thought, jump on clip in and ride hard these will not let you down or leave you wanting get them NOW!!!!!
