Crank Brothers Mallet DH Pedals

Crank Brothers Mallet DH Pedals

The Crank Brothers Mallet DH pedal is loved by many riders and mechanics throughout the downhill/ all mountain community. The original Mallet was a hit with many riders, but Crank Brothers knew they could do better. In 2011, the Mallet was revamped and made thinner and lighter. However, many riders missed the wider platform. Steve Peat (Santa Cruz Syndicate) worked with Crank Brothers on the new Mallet DH/ Race. Therefore, Crank Brothers went back to the drawing board to create a light weight, wide pedal. The Crank Brothers Mallet DH is the perfect combination of function, feel, and performance.

I have been mountain biking the front range in Colorado for several years now and have had multiple types of pedals. These pedal work well as both clip in and flats. (the flat option really is only for limited use....like that rock garden you don't feel comfortable being "clipped in" while riding....if you want to ride "flat style" you'll have to raise the flat pedal screw height on the platform so you don't feel the "clip in" in the center. The solid feel of the pedal is great for cornering, jumping, and chatter....having ridden spd for 20years it took a bit to adjust to the increased float (about 3-4 rides), but it is this increased float which make them great for cornering!

I'm surprised there aren't more negative reviews on these unless the site deletes them. I've gone through 4 pairs in a year of DH/Enduro riding(I'm stubborn/gave them a chance). The bearings keep seizing up to the point the pedal will not rotate at all. I feel like this shouldn't be encountered with a premium pedal.

Other than this major issue I love the pedals. Otherwise an excellent design. I'd give them another chance if Crank Bros fixed this issue. I know numerous racers who have the same issue so it's not isolated.

I use this pedal practically anywhere. On DH tracks. On any day trail ride. Even when riding on paved road with my kid, coz the pedal is wide enough you can ride it with just flip flops.

Excellent build quality and design. The clip on mechanism is inferior to Shimano so clipping in and out is harder and tricky. It does get better with practice, but still ways to go.

Comments about CrankBrothers Crank Brothers Mallet DH Pedals:

Finally pulled the trigger on this and my only regret is waiting this long. Although it has DH shredding written all over it, I find this perfect for all-trail use. It is very easy clipping in and out with no glitch or complains. The extra platform comes in handy on sketchy terrains. I have only taken this out on 6 trips of 12 miles each and I am a very happy with it. Build-wise, it seems and feels very durable but I'll give it a year or so. Just do it, you will not regret it, Crank Brothers makes some of the sickest pedals in the market and Jenson USA gets you the best price.

Easy to get into and out of. I ride flats as well so I like the support from the large pedal platform and the amount of float you get with these pedals.
