I run a 1x9 on a steel hardtail and was dropping my chain (no ISCG mount). This was a cheap and easy fix. It is easy to use but is a bit heavy and noisy and might cause a bit of drag but it works well consindering.

It is an interesting approach to chain holding devices. It works nice for really long chain applications, such as xtracyles. Keeps the chain tensioned and in place, but it makes quite a bit of noise. A small sprocket and bearings would make it a lot more silent, albeit a bit heavier.

Chainstay mount tensioners are love-it or hate-it. They either work or they don't. This one happened to work with my frame, but it needed a lot of coaxing to do so. Initially, the chainstays didn't mount the mounting groove in the device properly. So the clamping surface had to be pried open and reshaped to get it to mount up right. It took quite a bit of work, then it needed repainting as the paint had flecked off during the process.
In the end, the effort was worth it since it worked like a charm. I couldnt' use a BB mounted or ISCG mounted tensioner since i'm using a square taper BB and my frame doesnt have ISCG mounts. So it was this or nothing at all.
Best part is, I have ample clearance with the rear tire and the roller is wide enough to accomodate the chain as it swings through the 3 chainrings and 9 cogs.
There is sa bit of extra noise while pedaling but its a minor tradeoff from the addeded security from chain drops and annoying chainslap.
Do make sure that your frames chainstays are small enough to accept the clamping part of the tensioner. Otherwise, you'll need a long day ahead of you to get it to fit.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Smooth operation and overall the experience was good. However, unless you are on a tight budget I recommend a different device. The tensioner left the chain slacker than I liked.
