Five years ago, the words "tubeless" and "road" did not exist in the same sentence. Flash forward to 2014 and the concept of tubeless-road wheel setups is like a pacing tiger ready to be uncaged. The DT Swiss R 1700 Tricon® features tubeless technology that allows you to run your tires at a lower pressure for better traction in the corners and an overall smoother ride. Additionally, Tubeless technology makes pinch flats non-existent, offering a better setup for rough pavement and gravel roads.
In addition to the benefits of having a tubeless rim, the R 1700 Tricon uses a patented freewheel system that uses precision ratchets, featuring extremely high load capacity and reliability. The TRICON® wheel technology combines this ratchet system with the impressive, revolutionary tubeless rim design to create a lightweight wheelset that's perfect for training and racing alike. In much appreciation to the open crowfoot lacing and straight double threaded spokes, TRICON technology makes the R 1700 stiff yet comfortable. Whether you're looking for the ideal wheel for weekend club rides, cyclocross domination, or off season training, the R 1700 Tricon can, and will assume the role!

These came on my 2011 Giant TCR SL Advanced 3. Overall I love them. The downside is that because of the special compound in the spoke's fastener they can't be serviced locally. I had a spoke "let go" (there was no trauma that caused it) on the front wheel out of the blue. Shop broke 3 more trying to true the wheel. They had to send to Switzerland for repair. No local shop will touch them. So, any kind of maintenance is out of the question unless you can stand to be with out them for a month at a time. Another spoke just "let go". I think it's time to replace. 5 years riding, many many many miles. The whole spoke thing is a killer for other wise excellent wheels. Maybe 2011 was a bad batch? I'm probably not going to go with these again.
