Excellent Quality Short With Some Fit Issues.
These Dakine Ridge Shorts (in Pirate Black, which is really a nice charcoal gray twill) are very good quality, basic riding shorts that are cut well for biking (see caveat regarding "fit" below) and also look great for casual wear. The fabric doesn't have any stretch to speak of, but seems sturdy and is very soft and comfortable. The two hand pockets and one hook & loop-secured back pocket are better suited for wallet and keys during casual wear but are not well suited for riding. It would be nice to have a zippered thigh pocket for comfort and security on a ride, but that would add cost so I'll deal with it.

I was looking for longer shorts to eliminate exposed "thigh gap" when wearing knee pads, since apparently that's poor style. My current shorts are Zoic Blackmarket which are polyester and advertised as having an 11 inch inseam. They left about two inches of exposed flesh above my knee pads (all three different pairs that I own), so I was looking for shorts with at least a 13-14 inch inseam and preferably nylon fabric as that material has proven more durable for me. In my price range, that really only left options from Dakine and possibly Endura, and I narrowed it down to either these (Ridge) or the Dakine Derail, which has some stretch (which I didn't really want) and are one inch longer. Most reviews I could find commented that the Dakine shorts fit "small." Also, the pictures I can find always show the shorts sagging quite low on the model's hips (a style to which I am not partial). My waist measures 32" but all my pants are 31". Virtually every pant with 32" inch waist has been too large for me. I decided to go with this short in 30" waist as the size chart indicates this for 30-32" waist and I'd rather not rely on the hook & loop tabs to cinch down to size. I also thought the larger size would be baggier throughout and I wanted a more fitted look.

When I put them on the waist fit perfectly at the limit...i.e. my waist measures 32" and these would certainly be too small if I had any more girth, so I'd say the Dakine size chart is spot on in that regard. However, they are TOO SHORT. They seem barely any longer than the Zoic short with an 11" inseam. Confused, I got out the tape measure and went investigating. It turns out that the Ridge Short is just one inch longer than the Zoic Blackmarket from the waistband to the hem (total length). The Ridge short has a front rise (waistband to crotch) that is two inches less than the Zoic. So basically, the Ridge has a three inch longer inseam because the shorts are one inch longer and the crotch is two inches higher. If I wanted the short to fall three inches lower than the Blackmarket, I would have to wear them two inches lower at the waist, which of course would require a larger size. So in that regard, they do run "small," and that explains why all the models were sagging them down so low. If you could get used to wearing the shorts down on the hips (if you're not already) this would be a tolerable solution because they don't look like they're sagging much since the crotch is so high and the cut still works for riding, but you will likely have to size up to do so.

Nice change from std nylon baggies
Comfortable. They feel like they could take a beating. Material is more of a wool texture - nice change from the standard nylon/poly shell. Fit was right on. Good value on sale.
