Diamondback Scapegoat Bike 2014

Perfect for those times when you want to go a bit bigger than your average singletrack allows, the Scapegoat is ready and willing to rip whatever line you're planning. The 2014 Diamondback Scapegoat mixes the stability and ruggedness of a downhill bike with the agility and playfulness of an all-mountain machine. This dirt trail bomber shares many of the pedal-efficient characteristics of the Diamondback Mission series with extended travel and frame reinforcement to accommodate the burlier side of things.

The 2014 Scapegoat 6" frame is created from 6061-T6 Weapons Grade Aluminum and features a hydroformed top tube, butted and formed downtube seatstays, seatstay bridge, a tapered headtube, ISCG 05 tabs, a 142×12mm E-Thru Axle drop out and Diamondback's legendary Knuckle Box Suspension technology.

The Knuckle Box, or bell crank, is the core of Diamondback's single-pivot four-bar suspension platform. Optimally placed pivots equate to a low leverage ratio, and ultimately to superior pedaling efficiency and small-bump compliance. This also allows the shock to work more efficiently and reduces pedal induced motion. It also reduces overall load on the system which will lead to improved shock and bearing life. Placing the Knuckle Box low within the frame, situates the greatest weight of the bike closer to the bottom bracket, which lowers the bike’s center of gravity and allows it to better track and corner.

A benefit of Diamondback's four-bar linkage is increased control over the wheel-rate. Wheel-rate is also one of the most significant aspects of a suspension system. Wheel-rate is the effective spring-rate when measured at the wheel. Working closely with Fox, Diamondback was able to optimize the wheel-rate to be linear-to-slightly progressive. This results in superb small-bump compliance, more perceived travel and excellent bottom-out protection. For the Scapegoat, Diamondback has chosen to run a 160mm (216×63) Fox Float X CTD Adjust Rear Shock with Kashima Coat. This keeps the rear riding plush without too much sacrifice on the pedal uphill.

Where the Scapegoat initially started as a beefed up version of the popular Diamondback Mission, a few tweaks have taken place over the years to define it more as a park/light freeride bike and separate it from its Mission brethren. The bike is designed around a 180mm fork up front which allows the front end to sit slack at a hill-shredding 66 degrees. The slacker front end eats obstacles with ease and ads more stability on the descents. Diamondback also added a reinforced downtube to ensure a stable platform regardless of how big you go. By also increasing the size of the hardware, less stress is placed on the bearings, sustaining their life.

For 2014, Diamondback kept their promise to give the Scapegoat the ultimate build – one that is perfect right off the showroom floor. This impressive built starts from the ground up with a Easton Havoc UST compatible wheelset wrapped in KENDA NEVEGAL 26×2.35 w/ STICK-E rubber compound. The only thing that can stop these bad boys from spinning is the set of Shimano Zee 4 piston Hydraulic Disc Brakes with Zee servo wave and tool-free reach and stroke adjust (8” front/7”rear). Pair that with the Shimano Saint drivetrain including short cage rear derailleur and 10spd cassette (11-34) and you’ve got the ability to crush any descent. A Gravity Lite Mega Exo single ring crankset and guide offer simplicity and strength to the mix. Easton comes back in to round it out with a Havoc Handlebar and 50mm stem; secured with an FSA No57 sealed cartridge headset.

Scapegoat frame features and characteristics:
Tapered Head tube – Today’s longer travel forks generate more stress on the head tube. Add in today’s more aggressive rider and the need for additional strength in that region becomes imperative. The 2014 Scapegoat frame is equipped with a tapered head tube for enhanced steering and extra strength.
142×12 mm Thru Axle – Employing Shimano’s new 142×12 mm E-Thru design makes for a stiffer and stronger rear-end on the bike.
Single-Sided Hardware – Single-sided hardware used for the three main pivot points allows for easy access to your high-quality Enduro Max bearings simply with standard tools. No more removing the crankset to tighten or service your pivots.

Knucklebox Technology
LOW AND TIGHT – The Knuckle Box platform was designed specifically to be low and tight:
Low center of gravity: All suspension parts are positioned farther down on the frame for a stable and balanced ride.
Low leverage suspension design: Lower air pressure results in longer shock life, less frame loading and better pedaling.
Tight, compact linkage system of the Knuckle Box bell crank isolates and cradles the rear shock.
Tight and large anodized aluminum hardware, matched with Force-Rated Enduro Max Bearings: Withstands higher loads and better handles oscillating motion.

Comments about Diamondback Scapegoat Bike 2014:

I've had more fun on this bike than any other bike I have ever ridden. Capable of going anywhere from your local trails to full on dh trails at a bike park. Jumpable, flickable, while still being able to be pedaled to the top of any mountain. You will definitely have to earn your downhills being close to 35lbs. Once you head down your grind to the top will definitely be rewarded. Super plush, feels like you are riding a light dh bike. Component spec is top notch, nothing you will need to swap out, ready to go right out of the box.
