Diamondback Steilacoom RCX Pro Bike 2014

Diamondback's homebase is located in the Pacific Northwest, home to some of the wettest, muddiest, and gnarliest terrain in the world. With so much experience riding the kind of conditions cyclocross is know for, Diamondback set out to create a lean, mean cyclocross machine: one that sheds mud, portages easily, and crushes any choppy terrain in its path. The Steilacoom RCX Pro features a light and stiff platform—via BB386—that provides more acceleration and control while pedaling out of the saddle, a flatter top tube for easy portage, and meticulously dialed cyclocross specific geometry to give you an extra edge.

At the core of the Steilacoom RCX Pro is the DBR CX Pro Spec Fully Butted 7005 Alloy Competition Cyclocross frame with formed top tube and an integrated headtube. The frame, both light and durable, is what most look for in a cross bike. It’s well-equipped to tackle any single track, mud field, sand pit, staircase, hurdle or inclement weather between the starting gate and the finish line. Paired with the frame is a DBCX Carbon fork. With a carbon steerer and clearance enough for larger tires and fenders, this fork helps to save weight and provides strength up front for exceptionally responsive steering capabilities.

The Steilacoom RCX Pro's component setup is decked out with an impressive SRAM build. The drivetrain features: 11spd 1070 cassette, PC-1171 chain, Force22 derailleurs and doubletap shifters, and FSA's’s team issue carbon monocoque SLK crankset with BB386 technology—for a lightweight and extremely stiff pedaling platform. Once you’re up to speed, the TRP cantilevers provide the stopping power you need. Super-light Easton EA70 SL rims are laced to Easton EA70 Hubs and wrapped with Michelin Cyclocross Mud 2 700×30c tires. Gluttons for punishment, these wheels are sure to see you through any situation. The cockpit is outfitted with FSA SLK carbon handlebars, stem, seatpost, and topped off with the WTB Silverado Team saddle. You can admit it, this bike is a stone cold stunner.

Comments about Diamondback Steilacoom RCX Pro Bike 2014:

First off, going from an older cyclocross bike to this bike was like going from a show pony to a racing steed. The geometry of this bike is lower, meaner and steeper than what I was riding before, so not only did it fit me better, it handled quicker AND was over a pound lighter. Surprisingly, for an aluminum frame I found it quite comfortable and stiff.

This bike is a race bike. Built for aggressive riding and cornering, the bike begs for speed and loves to be pushed hard. The only thing I felt was lacking was the cranks were creaky out of the box (easily fixed with the application of some grease to the spindle) and the brakes squeal if not set up properly. I ended up throwing some Kool-Stop salmon pads on and the squealing went right away.

Shifting is pretty dang nice with SRAM Force 22 throughout. The levers are comfortable and reach-adjustable. The stock shift cables work pretty nice too. I wish the cassette was an 11-28 or 11-30, but it is an 11-26, because you need to go FAST!

For anyone confused about the bottom bracket, it has a standard English-threaded 68mm shell. The BB386 Evo cranks have a 30mm spindle and can fit on either a threaded frame or a BB30/PF30 frame. You need a special FSA tool to remove the bottom bracket if you were looking to upgrade to different cranks.

This bike has a reasonably light weight out of the box. The SRAM stuff, carbon cockpit and carbon cranks are stiff and light. Putting proper cross tubulars on this bike easily gets it under 18 lbs with pedals. You'll fly up the hills and over the barriers a little faster than the dudes with discs.

Also, the bike has a rad "tiki" white-on-raw paint job that my buddy says is borred from Native American motifs of the Pacific Northwest. I am pretty sure that makes you faster, too.

If you're not worried about going fast, and need the bike for utilitarian purposes, it has rack mounts on the rear and front and rear fender mounts. All around, this bike is pretty dang perfect.

Comments about Diamondback Steilacoom RCX Pro Bike 2014:

With dry weather I have been using this bike as a daily commuter. Light (approx. 19lbs), fast, responsive and fun. Changing out the cross tires for road slicks would make this bike a blast on longer road rides. SRAM force 22 components are reliable and add value to this machine. Although the brakes require careful dialing in, they are lightweight and provide plenty of power. Overall a great deal for this price.

Comments about Diamondback Steilacoom RCX Pro Bike 2014:

Really fun bike to ride, is my first CX bike so I don't have much to compare to. Just rode it in the mountains to test it, it climbed well on the hwy, tolerated trail abuse with water crossings, tight switchbacks and a few rocks and bunny hops. But it felt at home climbing fire roads, it was just effortless.
Is very light, I love the raw aluminum finish (looks great with dirt on it)The SRAM Force performs really well, shifts quick and it has a chain catcher too.
I don't like the brakes, they wont stop the bike but they're good to alert other trail users or to scare bears (really noisy) Overall, a really fun bike to ride, the one that does it all. It would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the brakes.

This has to be the best Aluminum CX out there right now. Solid Force 22 build and great FSA components. At this price this thing is a steal! The brushed aluminum is fantastic looking.
