Diamondback Mission Bike 2014

The diverse range of terrain encountered in all-mountain/enduro riding calls for a bike that is rugged yet adaptable. Trailriders search far and wide for a bike with a responsive drivetrain and plush suspension, powerful braking and a bombproof frame that can stand up to rocks, roots, and high pressure landings—the kind of obstacles the raw forces of nature present at every turn. All of this in the pursuit of a trail bike that can truly do-it-all, that won't keep you guessing as the landscape changes, but will instead prove itself a tool to take you as fast, far, and high as your imagination desires. Your tiresome search ends with the 2014 Diamondback Mission. The elusive holy grail is found, a textbook happy ending unfolded, the fabled bike that can do-it-all has arrived.

The 2014 Mission All Mountain 6" frame is built from 6061-T6 Weapons Grade Aluminum and features a hydroformed top tube, a butted and formed downtube and seatstays, seatstay bridge, a tapered headtube, ISCG tabs, a 142×12mm E-Thru Axle drop out and Diamondbacks legendary Knuckle Box Suspension technology. The Knuckle Box, or bell crank, is the core of Diamondback's single-pivot four-bar suspension platform. Optimally placed pivots equate to a low leverage ratio, and ultimately to superior pedaling efficiency and small-bump compliance. This also allows the shock to work more efficiently and reduces pedal induced motion, reducing the overall load on the system which will lead to improved shock and bearing life. Placing the Knuckle Box low within the frame, situates the greatest weight of the bike closer to the bottom bracket, which lowers the bike’s center of gravity and allows it to better track and corner.

A benefit of Diamondback's four-bar linkage is increased control over the wheel-rate. Wheel-rate is also one of the most significant aspects of a suspension system. Wheel-rate is the effective spring-rate when measured at the wheel. Working closely with Fox, Diamondback was able to optimize the wheel-rate to be linear-to-slightly progressive. This results are superb small-bump compliance, more perceived travel and excellent bottom-out protection. For the Mission, Diamondback chose to run the stellar Fox Float CTD Air Shock with Boost Valve Technologies. The DB Mission Spec air shock has rebound adjust and a 3 position CTD lever that you can adjust on the fly for all your Climb, Trail, and Descent needs. This keeps the rear riding plush without sacrifice on the pedal uphill.

The Mission springs to life on the descent. Seeking a perfect fork for this all-mountain steed, Diamondback chose a Fox 34 Float CTD. A 160mm fork up front allows the front end to sit slack at a capable 67 degrees. The slacker front end eats obstacles with ease and ads more stability on the descents but doesn’t compromise ones climbing ability. With 160mm of travel, external rebound, a tapered steerer, 36mm Easton aluminum stanchions, and magnesium lowers, this is a fork that means business.

In addition to the top notch Fox Suspension, the Mission drivetrain is comprised of a Sram X-9 Type 2 10spd rear derailleur, X-7 shifters, a PG-1030 10spd Cassette (11-36t), and Shimano Deore dual pull, top swing 34.9 front derailleur for accurate shifting every time. The Raceface Respond 10spd crankset with outboard bearing bottom bracket and bash guard (24/36/AM) provide a powerful base for maximum speed and a stiff platform for acceleration out of the saddle. Stopping power is supplied via the AVID Elixir 5 Hydraulic disc brakes (200mm front/180mm rear). An Easton stem and post accompany a DB Probar oversized handlebar for a pleasing yet value oriented cockpit. In the same vein we’ve spec’d a 32h AM260HD double wall rim and alloy sealed cartridge bearing hubs (15mm front/142×12mm rear, 32h) to build out the wheelset combining strength and good looks with value.

Mission frame features & Characteristics:
Tapered Head tube – Today’s longer travel forks generate more stress on the head tube. Add in today’s more aggressive rider and the need for additional strength in that region becomes imperative. Thus the 2014 Mission frame is equipped with a tapered head tube for enhanced steering and extra strength.
142×12 mm Thru Axle – Employing Shimano’s new 142×12 mm E-Thru design makes for a stiffer and stronger rear-end on the bike.
Single-Sided Hardware – Single-sided oversized heat treated hardware is used for the three main pivot points allows for easy access to your 14 high-quality Enduro Max bearings simply with standard tools. No more removing the crankset to tighten or service your pivots.
Partnership w/ Fox – By providing suspension kinematics early in the design process, Fox is able to custom tune their shock to work precisely with DB frames, improving performance.

Knucklebox Technology
LOW AND TIGHT – The Knuckle Box platform was designed specifically to be low and tight:
Low center of gravity: All suspension parts are positioned farther down on the frame for a stable and balanced ride.
Low leverage suspension design: Lower air pressure results in longer shock life, less frame loading and better pedaling.
Tight, compact linkage system of the Knuckle Box bell crank isolates and cradles the rear shock.
Tight and large anodized aluminum hardware, matched with Force-Rated Enduro Max Bearings: Withstands higher loads and better handles oscillating motion.
