Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grip

The Ergon GE1 is a newly designed lock-on grips developed specially for gravity bikes. Knowing that riders in this category run extra wide bars with a generous bend to their elbow, the GE1 grip was made to reduce fatiguing in the arms and hands to provide the comfort Ergon products are known for. The GE1 grips employs two different rubber compounds, one of which is used in a texturized zone facing opposite of nature rotation of the hand to prevent your hands from slipping around and ultimately making for a more comfortable grip.

Ergon GE1 MTB Grip Features

  • Texture opposed the rotation of the hand while riding, and is angled to support the arm and upper body position
  • Improved pressure distribution in the thumb area
  • Internal core with cut outs complements grip textures
  • Additional damping on grips external edges
  • Multiple grip textures for improved feel
  • Surface profile promotes maximum grip

Bought these just before heading to Montana for a few days of riding. The riding was great, and my hands/grips were not something I thought about once in 4 rides (one short jaunt and 3 rides with mileage in the teens... long climbs and descents). Natural terrain, no manmade features/jumps/drops save for some smaller ones on the short trail. In short, just the type of riding that Ergon developed these grips for. This is the first grip manufacturer change I've made in 5 or so years, and I was happy to observe that I didn't regret the decision once. Can't wait to get more time with these grips, which means time on the trail, and that's always good.

I had seen that this grip was co-developed with Fabien Barel, which caught my interest because usually the stuff he makes is very good. I also thought the shape of the grips looked promising. However, having used it for a couple months, I realize it just doesn't suit me. It's actually much thinner than I thought and the padding is very firm/hard which hurt my hands on longer rides. If it were just a few millimeters thicker all around, it would probably be much better.

I've replaced them with the ODI Rogues which are definitely an improvement over these. They are thicker, grippier, and softer (but not too soft). I may even try going with the ESI Chunky or Extra Chunky for even more vibration reduction and grip.

So I would say try these grips if you have smaller hands and/or you prefer a thin/hard grip. Otherwise go for something thicker/softer.

By the way, if you do get these, be careful with the screw. It seems to have very soft metal and so they probably aren't kidding around when they tell you to torque it to an exact spec. My ODI Rogue screws were much more tolerant.

Awesome grips

Cons

  • Colored Rubber Not Metal

Comments about Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grips:

Bought a pair of these for my wife to use. She loves them said they were the best grips she's used. She raved about them so much that I got some for myself. supple grip but not at the expense of durability. Grip in all the right areas but not to soft. They really are great grips I'm just not sure they are worth the additional $15 over an ODI set. But they are unique and sexy and that counts for something. I actually wanted to get my wife the slim green until I realized the rubber was colored and not the metal, that was a big deterrent.

Comments about Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grips:

I originally bought these to help combat wrist pain while riding my trail bike. I liked them well enough to want to try them on my downhill bike, as well. These are the only grips I've used so far that allow me to ride 2 days in a row at a bike park without my hands aching after I'm done.

My only complaint would be the durability. After about 4-6 months of being swapped between two bikes, they are showing signs of wear. Aside from that, they've been great.

Comments about Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grips:

bought one set for new build and liked so much putting on other bike. Work very well with wide bars to help get varying hand positions quickly and with confidence during different riding situations. Comfortable and just the right amount of cushion.

Comments about Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grips:

I use these for all forms of mountain biking; xc, Enduro, freeride and some dh. They work great! I typically wear full finger gloves with them, however, I have used my fingerless gloves before (I found the grips became a little slippery from sweating with fingerless.. But nothing serious). I love the Color choices - I have red. I would certainly recommend these to all riders.

Comments about Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grips:

Best grips I've used so far! I'd gladly purchase them again once they're worn out. They are very comfortable and also very durable. A few weeks back I rode a 100 kms XC race in Parguera, Puerto Rico, and they handled the strain of a long ride incredibly well. I am very pleased with this product and would recommend this to anyone in need of comfortability and above all, trustworthy products for their bikes!

Comments about Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grips:

These are my favorite grips of all time. They flare out a bit towards the middle and index fingers to allow for a more ergonomic grip that prevents hand/forearm fatigue and gives you a better riding posture with the elbows bent outwards. Because of the closed end design, they will add a little length (1/4 inch?) to each end of the handlebars.

Comments about Ergon GE1 MTB Technical Grips:

The GE1 grips look great, the oval shape is very comfortable and the newer lock-on style works great with carbon bars. My bars aren't extraordinarily wide, and the grips are still comfortable. I might rate the GA1Evo as slightly more comfortable, but these look better and I prefer the lock-on with these.

My only real concern is they are a little pricey and the soft end probably isn't going to hold up very well if I brush up against a tree or rock. So far, so good, though!
