Five Ten Kestrel Boa Shoes

Five Ten Kestrel Shoes

The Kestrel features stiff, carbon-infused shanks that are designed for ultimate power transfer to the pedals. Five Ten employs the BOA IP1 closure system that ensures a custom fit, with the right amount of pressure for a snug feel at the turn of the dial. The outsole is comprised of proprietary dual-compound Stealth rubber. Where the pedal meets the shoe, the Kestrel has C4 Stealth compound that increases power transfer and durability. Mi6 rubber is used at the heel and toe boxes for optimal traction and promote maximum durability as you shred away.

Five Ten Kestrel Shoes Features:

  • Synthetic weather-resistant toe box
  • Proprietary dual-compound Stealth rubber outsole
  • C4 Stealth compound where pedal contacts the shoe
  • Mi6 rubber on the heel and toe for optimal traction

Some issues need to be resolved
I am on my third pair of these after only 4 months! First pair started to have the rubber in the toe area wear out and eventually the whole grip on the toe started to come apart.

Replacement pair had the same issue after only a few weeks of normal use, you know:- riding your bike and the occasional hike a bike section (I am talking only a few yards here and there, not an epic mile up a hill or anything like that)

Third pair is only 2 rides old, seem ok.. but the previous ones also seemed ok at the two ride point.

I really hope they can sort these issues, they are really nice to wear but it sucks to change them every 6 weeks!

So good!
I've been using these shoes for a couple weeks now and they are great! The BOA system is super comfortable and very easy to use. The soles are SOOO stiff (in a good way!). The recessed cleat makes walking around a lot easier, you sometimes even forget your in cycling shoes.

PROS: Good for Walking, Durable Sole, Simple to Use, Good Traction

Fell Apart
The shoe has no ventilation and is extremely hot in the summer. The rubber sole split by the toe of the shoe after less then a year of use.

CONS: Weak Sole, No Ventilation

Small
They run half size smaller, I'm 9-1/2" and I bought them 10", very comfortable and nice look, 2 weeks long using them, no problems so far, power transfer on pedals are 100%.

A decent Shoe
I had been waiting for the Kestrel shoe for almost a year after reading about it. I originally purchased the size 12.5 but found it too big and then sent that back, no problems, and exchanged for a size 12. After riding several times using the Kestrel size 12, I found my foot becoming numb after about 25minutes. I modified the positioning of the cleat and modified the BOA to no success. After speaking with Five Ten about my issues, they recommended that I switch to the Five Ten Maltese Falcon.

PROS: Good Traction, Simple to Use, Good for Walking

Almost a year and still haven't broken in
Ran with Crank Brothers Mallets and Shimano XT trails. So stiff the Stealth rubber doesn't even make contact with pedals, so why bother. Flat and tight so feet go numb quick especially if you have to hike a bike or even just walk a short section of a trail. If you want stiff shoes just stick with a good pair of XC or Trails shoes that have a little more contour for your foot.

PROS: Stiff, Lightweight

CONS: One Boa System, Too Stiff, Too Flat

Great if you like stiff shoes.
I've had these shoes for over a year now and I love this shoe but it certainly took some time for the toe box to expand to fit so that my feet didn't get numb. However, I'm used to cramming my feet into ski boots so this wasn't a problem. In the end, the stiffness of the shoe gives it a great feel that you're connected with the bike. Felt faster on downs instantly with such a solid platform.

One thing that could be made better is protecting the boa as I have slid out a few times and landed directly on the boa.

CONS: Finicky Closures, Hard to Walk In
