Fizik M5 Uomo Boa MTB Shoes

fi'zi:k M5B Uomo Mountain Shoes

The M5 Uomo carries over the same high performance professional cycling shoes as its M3 older brother, except it strategically applies the best materials in all the right places for a fraction of the M3 cost. For instance the upper is equipped with a combination of fi’zi:k’s Microtex Nylon Mesh material and anti-scratch leather, for high comfort and durability. Comfort is further optimized by fi’zi:k’s Cycling Insole which also reduces weight. The Nylon Carbon reinforced outsole also keeps weight minimal while providing a stiff platform for superior power transfer and acceleration. Unlike the M5, the M5B features Fizik’s Boa IP1 closure system which employs a durable lace and a retention dial. The Boa dial system offers more points of engagement that allow an overall more precise retention and fit. Need we mention the M5 Uomo is handmade in Italy?

The Goods
Fit perfectly, 4E wide feet and still comfortable. Boa retention is the way to go, simple and strong. Lightweight. Bulletproof.

Excellent value and comfort.
This is my first pair of cycling shoes and I'm using them with a Trek 1.2 road bike with Shimano A530 pedals. These shoes are very comfortable and breathable. The BOA mechanism is super simple and fast to use. My only complaint is the weight. They don't look heavy but they're a bit clunky when walking.

I typically wear a size 10.5 and the 44's are perfect. I tried a pair of 45's but they were too long.

500 miles and still holding up fine
I use these shoes on both my MTB and road bike.
Fit is spot on for my foot. The location of the cleat feels a little forward than other shoes I have,
Soles are pretty rigid. So far tread wear is normal compared to my other MTB shoes.
Uppers are stiff in the heel and toe area and softer in the mid area as you would expect.
The boa is great. Never had boa system before.
Adjustment on the fly is so easy, just a twist.
My only gripe is the color choices.

I like 'em
Good fit for my wide foot. It would be a 5 star rating but the upper edge of the heel pocket has rubbed both heels raw after a week or so of riding so for now I have to use a band aid on both heels where it rubs. I'm sure I'll develop callous

Poor engineering
I had to return, which cost $22 to ship back, lesson learned on buying shoes here. I wear a 12 and got a 47, which was perfect. 2 Problems, the upper tongue is very stiff and digs into your foot and the hot spots at the cleats are intense. Expected a lot more at this price and from this brand.

Great cycling shoe
Fits true to size. You may need a tongue pad if you want additional cushioning.

Great shoe but awkward fit.
Overall it's an extremely nicely made shoe and you can't beat the Boa system. However, the height of the ankle is awkwardly high unlike other mtb shoes I've worn and it impacted my range of motion too much. I would have loved them had they been a normal lower height.

Really like the BOA closure...
I've been riding with these shoes for a few weeks. I had never tried shoes with this type of closure and wanted to give them a try. I must say that I prefer the BOA closure to buckles, velcro and laces. The shoes are really easy to put on and take off.

I don't have wider than normal feet, (D). But I'm use to shoes that have a broad toe box like those offered by Keen. At first I was a bit worried that these shoes were too narrow. But after breaking them in, they seem to fit fine.

The shoes are pretty durable. I took a fall in some loose pea gravel and the side of one shoe and BOA button were drug on the ground. Luckily there was not any damage.
