I have found these to lack grip in mud and water but they have enough surface area to make you feel really planted, giving you all the control you can have before moving up to clipless.
The Apple Green color is a little weird, and may be better described as Pea Soup. YMMV.
The price, however, is extraordinary, and these pedals are well worth the investment if you can't go up to the billet-based platforms with the screw-in/replaceable pins.
