GT Grade X 2016 Bike

GT Grade Alloy X Bike 2016

It’s Not Just Getting from A to B

A bike that’s ready for the adventure? We’re game. We live for that feeling that we’re out on the road. For some it’s the thrill of speeding down flat roads, the challenge of a gran fondo and maybe even the commute into work whatever it is, nothing beats those experiences on two wheels. Today, GT maintains and creates new and exciting technologies that improve riding in all aspects.

Cue the Grade Alloy X Bike. GT gets straight to the point with this build. They started with constructing the Grade Alloy frame with aluminum (obviously) and smooth welds with a hydroformed top tube and down tube. The frame is paired with a carbon fork and carbon steerer to dampen road vibrations. What really makes the Grade Alloy X shine are the hydraulic disc brakes.

You might be thinking, why should disc brakes be the highlight of a bike? For one, disc brakes perform smoothly and powerfully in all types of conditions. This is perfect for an all-rounder bike that the Grade Alloy X bike is. GT pairs this with the SRAM Rival groupset that a true workhorse and completely reliable. With 11 speeds, you will churn away with the FSA Omega Exo mid-compact crankset delivering power to the bulletproof Jalco CR435 wheels wrapped in wide 33mm Clement rubber.

Features:

  • GT double butted alloy frame with smooth welds and Triple Triangle ™, hydroformed TT/DT, tapered 1” 1/8- 1” ¼ head tube

Good design, poor rims and finish
Jenson's service is great. The bike was very well packed and assembled.

The bike is surprisingly light, and after about 40 miles I can say that it's one of the most comfortable bicycles I rode. In addition to the GT Grade X I own two more road and endurance bikes from a top brand which are much more expensive and neither of them felt this comfortable out of the box. The geometry is just terrific in terms of comfort and control. The bike's ability to iron the road bumps really impresses me as well. It's just great.

The SRAM X1 system definitely feels awkward at times. I do miss the larger chainring going down and the smaller chainring going up, but on the other hand the bike helps me challenge myself and become stronger. I wouldn't necessarily take it on a group rides or ultra long one on hilly terrain, but for shorter spans o rolling hills it does the job. The hydraulic brakes on the other hand are real pleasure to use.

So why do I give this bike a relatively low rating? because while it does perform surprisingly well in some areas, it is extremely disappointing in others.

The rims are of exceptionally poor quality. I didn't have high expectations. I assumed they won't be great at this price range and that they would be heavy. They aren't heavy, but they are extremely flimsy. The non welded rim ends aren't even aligned on the side and you can literally see and feel the edged moving. If you just spin them in the hair they give a very strange sensation, with a sort of heaviness like a kind of barrel effect. They are noisy and the rim tape is such a low quality that it's not really a tape but a narrow lose piece of plastic material that barley covers the holes, so I already had a tube pinched on them the first day, I didn't expect anything great about the wheels, but I expected wheels that even if they were heavy they would still convey some sense of safety. This don't. Being shocked by the poor quality of this wheels, I googled a little bit about them and it seems like quite a few people had this exact rims failed. So replacing this wheels isn't a question of if but of how soon. Since the front is TA and the rear is QR you can't just buy any disc wheelset either. Make your calculations in advance.

The paint job is nothing to write home about. It is definitely not on par with leading road bike manufactures. In multiple places it looks unpolished, especially around the fork. The tube of the seat post was completely unfinished and inserting the seat post meant peeling and stretching it completely even when using grease.

To summarize, the GT Grade X is a very fun bike. It is light and agile, comfortable and capable of riding on different terrains. It will surprise you for good and for bad. As much as I love the good, the bike fails to deliver on the most basic fabrication practices. When it comes to the details, the design deserves better than the execution. Even at this great price.

GT Grade X
So far, so awesome. Have only put 50 miles so far, on gravel, dirt and pavement. Light, smooth and nice fit, although I did swap out the stem for a shorter one (6omm approx). At least I would flip the stock stem to give a slightly highter mount. The bike was carefully pre-assembled by Kevin and Danny, with no problems on my end with the final assembly. Always a guess on fit, but this worked out perfectly and wouldn't change a thing. Highly recommend!!

Excellent purchase!
This bike is a fantastic value!. Bought to be my everyday commuter and weekend long rider. I have never used any SRAM products and I have been very impressed with the 1X drive train and its flawless operation. It is very smooth and all of the components are of the quality you would expect for the price and it's hard to argue with hydraulic brakes. Only changes made were to put some gatorskins on it and replace the stock saddle with my trusty Brooks B-17. Love the handling and it is very well suited for the riding I do

Great Bike. Well Equipped and ready to roll.
If you are looking for a nice gravel/cyclocross bike this is a great choice. I have ridden about 200 miles now on pavement and singletrack. It is not too heavy and is specced really well for the price. The SRAM Rival One group works great. I ended up switching out the saddle, seatpost, handlebar, and stem to accommodate my fit and I switched out the cranks to Force One. The frame is decent and the wheels have held up nicely. The tires are good, roll OK on pavement and grip well offroad. The assembly was OK, the brake housing was super long after switching the stem and handlebar, had to get them cut down. The brakes and derailleurs needed minor adjusting.

GT GRADE X
This was my first cyclocross purchase. Bike arrived in just a few days. Light and nimbe, takes hits on trails smoothly without sending you launching. Only complaint would be the packaging. It took longer to get all the zip ties off of the components than it did to put the bike together - for safe shipping I'm sure. Rides nice and shifts well with little vibration.

I'm 5'6.5" tall with 29 inseam. Would a size 53 frame fit me?
Michael T on Feb 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I believe so. You definitely would not want to go bigger.
What the maximum tire size that will fit?
A shopper on Mar 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: They say up to 35mm, but that may be different depending on the tread. Could be a bit more or less. Have read some who have used 40, but that seems pretty tight.
what is the max cassette size with this derailleur?
A shopper on Feb 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is the Medium Cage version of the derailleur which goes up to an 11-36. You will need the Long Cage version for anything bigger (trust me... I've tried!)
How wide is the bar on the 53cm?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2017
I'm 6'0 tall male. Would a 56 frame fit?
A shopper on Apr 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: 56 Will be a bit more racy, a 58 will be a bit longer and taller.
