Giro Womens Atmos Helmet 2012

The Giro Atmos has been a popular choice for road, ‘cross and XC riders and it is easy to see why. Giro’s wind tunnel ventilation system is a combination of active vents with exaust channels in the helmet that push cool fresh air onto the riders head and pushing out the warm air that is already inside the helmet. Keeping the head cooler and more comfortable is just the start. For safety, Giro uses an In-Mold carbon reinforced roll cage along with the In-Mold-EPS liner with polycarbonate shell. In the event of a crash, this technology allows the Giro Atmos to maintain structural integrity and offer maximum protection.

Giro uses Roc Loc 5, their best fit system, to fine tune the fit of the helmet with micro adjuster as well as the ability to offer fore/aft tilt adjustment. The interior padding is plush and uses X-Static fabric to combat bacteria and odor.

Features:

  • Wind Tunnel™ ventilation system which combines active vents with internal exhaust channels that thrust cool, fresh air over and around the riders head-while forcing heat and stale air out. This significant increase in air channeling makes a difference that riders will immediately feel and appreciate.
  • Super Fit system which is based on “human scale factors” data and nearly 20 years of crafting helmets for the best riders in the world. The result is a line of helmets that fit 98% of the worlds population, yet look and fit like they were made just for you.
  • In-mold construction fuses the helmet’s outer shell with the impact-absorbing EPS  liner. The two materials are fused together, and one is reinforced by the other. This ‘exoskeleton’ allows Giro to engineer helmets that are lighter, more durable and better ventilated.
  • Roll Cage reinforcement -- a tough web of DuPont® Nylon® molded inside a helmet’s EPS foam liner. It provides an extra measure of strength and integrity that you’ll never even notice…unless you need it.

Great Helmet
I got a great deal on a Giro Atmos for my wife from Jenson. Fiddled with it to get the fit right and took it out for its first ride the next evening. Rode about 4 kms. when she hit a patch of gravel while she was leaned into a turn. Took her down like she was in the Tour de France! Nasty bruise on her hip, slight scrape on her arm. When she got up she said that she 'might have hit her head'. Sure enough the helmet was dented and on close inspection the foam was cracked! Her head is fine (I am trained in spotting closed head injuries) - she wasn't even sure it had hit - so the helmet did its job. She'd probably have a depressed skull fracture if it wasn't for the helmet. So, Cheers for the Giro Atmos!

I LOVE this helmet!
I recently bought this for a ride in Arizona. It was hot out but this helmet was so comfortable and lightweight that at times it didn't even feel like I was wearing it. The airflow channels allowed the maximum airflow through the helmet that kept me cool throughout the ride. Yes I would buy it again.

Great Helmet
Was a long-time Specialized helmet user, so I was used to good forehead ventilation - but didn't want to spend the bucks on a Prevail. Tried a Bell Volt, and found the rear ventilation good, but felt like I had a heading pad on my forehead. The Atmos is far superior on ventilation. I can actually feel the air moving over all areas of my head. the tradeoff (for me) is that the pads only hit my head in a few spots (so the air can flow thru), so I get a little bit of contact pressure or rubbing in those spots. Not a real problem (at least for 90 minute rides) and totally worth it. Great helmet.

PROS: Lightweight, Super ventilation

Only the best
I've been riding with this helmet since 2007 after using many other helmets. This is by far the best helmet I've purchased and used consistently. It helps keep my head cool on hot days and I don't even notice that it's on my head, probably because it's so light and fits so well. I'm a double century rider and put in a lot of miles per year, about 10,000+ and always wear my Giro. On Feb 5, 2011 I was hit by a mini-van and nearly killed. I spent 10 weeks in the hospital with nearly a month in the ICU. I don't remember being hit or the first two months of my hospital visit as I had TBI with a required craniotomy to save my life. I was wearing my Giro Encinal helmet that I used for cold weather and rainy days. It was 6:30am and I had the proper lighting and following all road rules but still got hit by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel and hit me from behind at 55 mph. He called 911 or I would be dead for sure. Without the great Giro helmet I would have bean dead for sure as well. Both Giro helmets were very comfortable with the Encinal being better for cold weather riding and the Atmos perfect for the warm to hot weather.
