As cyclocross bikes and gravel bikes continue to grow in popularity, the demand for drop bar specific disc brakes is also increasing right along with them. In order to keep up with the drop-disc boom Hayes introduced the CX family of mechanical disc brakes. The CX line of brakes includes three offerings (Comp, Expert, & Pro) that vary in weight and hardware material for different price ranges. As the top tier offering of the group, the CX Pro gets extensive machining on the bridge, a machined vent hole on the body, and lightweight bits to shave a significant 37g per caliper.
Through Hayes's Crosshair alignment system, setting up the CX Pro is easier than ever. Simply, dial open the small black bolts that are adjacent to the caliper mounting bolts, snug the caliper onto the fork or frame while pushing it all the way toward the rotor, then slowly twist the Crosshair screws in until the outer pad is just off the rotor. Lastly, all you need to do is tighten the mounting bolts completely and adjust the inside pad position. The Crosshair adjustment system is so quick and easy, we'd challenge you to expire 3 minutes without finding perfect alignment.
Additional features include a tooled pad positioning free-turning dial on the backside which lets you precisely adjust the inboard (non-actuating) pad toward or away from the rotor, while the small hole above the dial is a set screw to keep it locked in place. On the bottom of the caliper is a vent window that dumps heat to keep the pads cool and stopping power maximized.
The rotors have also gone under the loupe and scalpel to shave some weight, and are easier than ever to set up thanks to the inclusion of Hayes's ingenious Crosshair alignment system.
With its high adjustability from the reach down to the crosshairs, and its light lever feel and proficient stopping power, the CX Pro is a superb design for dedicated cross racers and roadies gone disc.
I wanted brakes that do not drag on one side. Pads close equally on both sides. I like cables and not juice brakes. I don't have to worry about leaks, seals, etc. Can be repaired on the road if necessary. I wanted discs because I had to ride through a 4" of water once during a gully washer. Steep downhill and NO BRAKES! After building up my new bike, it happened to me again at the same place. Solid stopping power. That's what I wanted and needed. Got the nod of approval when I got home with no blood.
