Hope T-Rex Expander Sprocket

The Hope 40T-Rex Expander Sprocket provides 10 speed junkies the option of big toothed cogs at a fraction of the cost of an entirely new drivetrain. This 40T cassette expander replaces one of the smaller cogs (usually the 17T) to convert your 11-36T cassette into an 11-40T; it’s really that simple. Medium to long cage rear derailleurs are preferable, but an included 20mm B-Tension screw should get you going if your standard B-Tension screw is not long enough. The Hope 40T-Rex Expander Sprocket will allow you to expand your gear range without requiring new freehub bodies, shifters, and rear derailleurs.

Hope T-Rex Expander Sprocket Specifications

  • Adapts a 11-36 10spd cassette to give an 11-40t range
  • T-REx ring installs behind existing cassette, replacing one of the smaller sprockets, usually 17t
  • Shimano and SRAM specific tooth profiles and shifting
  • Perfect mating of supporting tabs reducing flex and aiding shift performance
  • Lower B-tension adjustment is needed ensuring good shifting throughout the cassette range compared to fitting a 42t
  • Hard anodized 7075-T6 aluminium
  • Weight: 74g

Hope T-Rex Expander Sprocket Compatibility

  • Shimano XT and XTR 11-36 10spd cassettes
  • SRAM PG1030, PG1050 and PG1070 11-36 cassettes

This should just be what bikes come with. I mounted it up with a 2x10 setup with a 22/32 up front, all X7 stuff on a salsa Hosethief and a king hub. With the proper tools it was a snap to install. If you are running a 2x10 like me you may find chain length an issue going small to small, but you should not run that combo anyway. I do miss the gap the missing 17 tooth creates cruising on a fire road or pavement every now and again but the benefits of a 40t outweigh the missing 17 for the way i like to ride here in the Phoenix, AZ area. This just needs to be the standard.

The other day, I went to wipe down my chain and noticed an alarming number of metal flecks. After only about 20 crash-fee rides, the teeth are chipping and the edges are becoming too sharp.

While it was easy to install, the material just seems to be either too soft or too brittle.

So far so good. I have two bikes with this cog and 1x10 setups. The hardtail for local XC races in dusty, rocky conditions (i.e. Southridge) and fully on local trails. Both no problems with teeth wear, shifting, nor hub fit so far. I run this with an XX1 crankset, have not experienced any durability issues so far. Loving it!

Picked this up as part of a 1x10 upgrade from my stock 3x9. Using with a Race Face 32T NW ring up front, Shimano mid cage shadow clutch derailleur and XTR shifter. The missing 17T isn't noticeable and the jump to the 40T is very smooth. I ride everything from cross country to aggressive all mountain and this new setup provides a sufficient range of gears for the way I ride.

I purchased this ring because I needed just a little bit more from my 1x10 and the previous cassette ring i had did not fair well. Smooth shifting, great looking, and easy to install.

When using this ring you must use at least a mid cage derailleur. Depending on your suspension design and placement of derailleur you may or may not need the longer b-tension screw.

Mach 6 carbon 38t chain ring, mid cage derailleur did not need the b-tension screw.

            Great buy right here.

Love it. I had some initial teething issues getting my XT shadow to shift correctly. Probably because it's a bit beat up. But my LBS dialed in in perfectly. Feels proper and I can climb stuff I was walking before.

I have a 2x set up on my Intense Tracer 2. I do a lot of climbing and prior to installing the hope expander, the rear gear ratio wouldn't get low enough, making climbs more difficult. After installing the expander, I immediately noticed a substantial difference in climbing. It changes gears real well.

After switching to a 2 x 10 drivetrain and 29" wheels last year, I've always felt like I was missing that last granny gear. This solves that issue.

I easily installed it to a SRAM 1050 cassette, paired to a SRAM XO medium-cage derailleur. The shifting is smooth. It hasn't had any issues pushing up to that extra big ring, and releases to a higher gear easily. I opted to do away with my 17t cog and it's been a good fit overall.
