Ibis is known in the cycling industry for the expert craftsmanship and high-grade materials that go into the manufacturing of their bicycles. To understand how it all started, take a trip back in time to 1980. Ibis founder, Scot Nicol read an article about the new “Klunker Bike” movement in the Spring issue of CoEvolution Quarterly-a friendly hippy magazine. The seed was planted. In 1981, in a workshop in Mendocino, California, the first Ibis bicycle was made. Glassy eyed onlookers saw the bicycle and asked Scot if he could produce more. Fast forward 30 years to present-day Ibis: a renowned boutique bicycle manufacturer with humble beginnings that continues to raise the bar in the mountain bike world.
The Ibis Hakkalugi Disc is a full carbon-fiber, disc brake equipped, dirty-road riding, go anywhere, do anything, cyclocross racing machine. The Hakkalugi has been in Ibis’s lineup for several years now, with the latest iteration sporting some fancy new disc brakes. Disc brakes have been used on mountain bikes for years, offering increased braking power and better braking performance in wet and muddy conditions. Excitingly, a recent rescission of UCI cyclocross rulings now allow disc brakes in sanctioned cyclocross races - awesome! Disc brakes will make riding in the rainy instantly become more fun, allowing you to stop on a dime and prevent you from having to start braking a half-mile before a turn like that other guy on the carbon wheels and rim brakes.
Aside from the disc brakes, the Ibis Hakkalugi Disc now comes with a tapered headtube, pressfit bottom bracket, and a completely redrawn geometry chart for all 6 available sizes. Due to extra wide tire clearance, you can throw some fat tires on the Hakkalugi and really get down and dirty and hit some legitimate single-track without sliding around like a hockey puck. The rear triangle can fit a 38c tire comfortably while the ENVE fork clears an enormous 48c tire.
The Force CX1 build kit brings SRAM’s coveted 1x11 drivetrain to the realm of cyclocross. When racing ‘cross, many find they stay in their big chainring for the entire race. With a wider range cassette and a properly chosen front chainring, a 1x drivetrain will not only simplify but also lighten up bike. The CX1 crankset, much like the X01 crankset, features carbon crankarms and removable spider yet the spider is cyclocross specific with an 110BCD. The chainrings used on the CX1 crankset feature SRAM’s X-Sync tooth profile which acts as a built in chain guide system. The rear derailleur’s X-Horizon design eliminates any vertical movement which reduces shift forces and prevents “ghost shifting”. The CX1 drivetrain brings the latest and greatest SRAM technologies to your new complete bike offering a simple, clean, and more importantly, reliable drivetrain to your Ibis Hakkalugi.
