Ibis Tranny 29 Frame
A History of Ibis
Ibis is known in the cycling industry for the expert craftsmanship and high-grade materials that go into the manufacturing of their bicycles. To understand how it all started, take a trip back in time to 1980. Ibis founder, Scot Nicol read an article about the new "Klunker Bike" movement in the Spring issue of CoEvolution Quarterly€”a friendly hippy magazine. The seed was planted. In 1981, in a workshop in Mendocino, California, the first Ibis bicycle was made. Glassy eyed onlookers saw the bicycle and asked Scot if he could produce more. Fast forward 30 years to present-day Ibis: a renowned boutique bicycle manufacturer with humble beginnings that continues to raise the bar in the mountain bike world.
Ibis Tranny 29 Frame
The Ibis Tranny 29 is fresh out of several years in development. Ibis's methodical approach to designing bikes left no room for error and they wanted to make sure everything was absolutely dialed before debuting the Tranny 29. The Tranny 29 is a beautiful tribute to cutting edge design. Ibis's lead designer, Roxy Lo, describes the Tranny 29 this way:
"The Tranny's new lines and contours are svelte and angular. The design was developed at similar time as the Ripley, so the looks are very similar in all the tube contours; the Tranny 29 has an aggressive styling and an overall sleek nature. From the cable ports down to the derailleur mount, dropouts and fasteners, every detail is refined and minimized to be simple, functional and easy on the eye. From afar, you may not notice its subtle details, and that's fine. One can obsess over the nuances as time goes on."
The Ibis Tranny 29 is a lightweight, nimble 29er hardtail that is as versatile as it is fun to ride. Ibis set out to create a 29er that handled with the agility of a traditional 26" bike and hit the nail square on the head. The Tranny blasts over bumps, carves through corners, and climbs like an angry mountain goat. The Tranny can operate as a geared bike or be easily converted into a singlespeed trail blazer. The Tranny 29's key design feature is it's Slot Machine technology. A sliding box section behind the bottom bracket allows for easy conversion to singlespeed. Chainstay length is adjustable, making it simple to dial in the perfect tension. A similar box design also resides at the top of the seatstays and allows you to take the whole rear end off of the bike. Remove two bolts and your bike is in two pieces. This removable triangle design also accommodates the use of a Gates Carbon Belt Drive.
Ibis worked closely with their composite engineers to achieve a frame design that's not only beautiful but incorporates an array of performance features. The Tranny frame weighs in at an incredible 3.08lbs. The carbon layup found in the Tranny's chainstays is incredibly complicated. The chainstays need to be stiff but they also need to flex in the front when tightening the Slot Machine. Basically, they need to be stiff in one direction and flexible in another. The engineers at the factory had never heard of such a thing, but here we are a few years later, and Ibis has conquered the challenge.
