Yes, a bell can be construed as dorky, but for commuting in the city, it is essential.
This bell provides a nice even "ding" that resonates for a while after the initial strike.
It's light, cheap and can help you avoid collisions.

I bought this bell primarily because it was small and unobtrusive on my handlebars. Hikers definately hear the bell, but the sound is shrill and unpleasant. I've crashed a few times and it hasnt broken yet.
