Kona Kahuna Bike 2014
A 29" aluminum hardtail that'll kindly introduce you to the trail.
Maybe you aren't quite ready to become a whiz-bang racer. You're simply looking for a reliable mountain bike from a reliable brand to go explore the local trails on and maybe even ride with some work buddies on the weekend. The Kona Kahuna checks off both of these boxes. This 29" hardtail crams Kona's 25 year racing legacy and innovation into a simplified version of their XC racing bikes, making it easy for newcomers or riders on a budget to submerse themselves into the gratifying sport of mountain biking the right way.
Shaped from resilient, yet lightweight 7005 aluminum, the Kahuna's frame is strategically shaped to provide a smooth, stable ride in order to boost both your confidence and your love for the trail. Such features include a compact rear triangle which strikes a perfect balance between stability on quick downhill sections and agility in tight-twisty sections. Like most modern mountain bikes, the Kahuna is also gifted with a tapered headtube which better distributes shock force for better steering precision and better balance, giving you more control in rougher terrain.
Kona has invited some of the big names in game to luau with this Kahuna, including a Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain, a RockShox XC 32 TK 100mm travel coil fork, and Maxxis Ikon 29x2.2" tires. The large 29" wheels roll over ruts, roots, and rocks easier, as well as carry speed more efficiently. Don't worry though, if you catch a little too much speed the Shimano disc brakes will quickly and easily bring you to a stop.

Strengths: strong component set for the price. My only wish would be a tubeless ready setup.
Weaknesses: Only one water bottle holder, and it has such low clearance from the top tube that the bottle brushes against the derailleur cables when being removed/replaced. Can probably tweak this with a different bottle cage/bottle, of course, but it would be great to have it work right off the bat. No mountings for racks & such, which is a pity because this bike could tour well.
