Kuat Transfer 3 Bike Rack
At one time or another, we've all heard someone say, "it gets me from point A to point B€¦" when referring to the beater car they drive. As its name suggests, the Kuat Transfer Rack does transfer bikes from point A to point B exceptionally well, but it is by no means a beater of a bike rack!
Falling into the price point of many hanging style bike racks, the Kuat Transfer 3 Bike Rack offers the superiority of a tank-like hitch style rack with a robust steel construction. The unique arm arrangement makes absolutely no contact with the frame(s), while the PerfectFit adjustment system allows you to carry two bikes with up to 20"-29" tires. The front and rear cradle ratcheting straps that make loading and unloading quick, painless and secure.
Most of the time when we go to toss our bike on the rack, we have one hand holding up the bike, making it extremely hard to unfold the rack. The solution to this: the Transfer's unique spring loaded foot pedal at the pivot. Simply press the pedal with your foot and unfold the rack with your free hand.
The Transfer 3 Rack's handsome silver and black design will look good shadowing any vehicle with a 1.25" & 2" hitch receiver€¦ even if it is a beater.

To date, I have found only one really minor issue: When in a vertical position (that is, no bikes installed) the locking bar in the hinge does not fit completely in the slot. That is not a problem per say, but as a result the rack shakes a bit. That does not really matter since there are not bikes on it. In a horizontal position, the same bar fits tightly in the slot and no shaking occurs.
The tendency when you're assembling something to hold $10k worth of bikes is to tighten every bolt so that it will NEVER come out. But if you do this, you will very easily and quickly cause irreversible damage to some parts. The instructions fail to give any warning about not over-tightening bolts.
So...here are the rest of the instructions that Kuat should have included, but didn't...
1 - When you install the hook arms onto the round pucks, they attach with a single tensioner plate and bolt. Tighten this bolt just enough to keep the tensioner plate from spinning around...and not any tighter. If you over-tighten this bolt, it will cause the hook arm to have too much tension on it, which then causes the bolt to bend every time you move the hook arm when you load/unload a bike. After just a week of usage, all 3 of my bolts had bent because of this.
2 - When you install the rear tire cradle, once again...do not over tighten the bolt. If you over tighten it, it will crack the thin plastic sleeve that it is supposed to sit on top of. It is *really* tempting to want to over tighten this bolt. Don't do it.
So...you've now been warned. Aside from these assembly gotchas, the rack itself is EXCELLENT! And Kuat customer support has been FABULUOS at sending me replacement parts when I broke or over-tightened something. No questions asked...they just sent me the parts that I needed ASAP. Kudos to Kuat for great support!
