Hope Tech 3 E4 Disc Brake

Hope E4 TECH3 Disc Brake

Suitable for any riding style, the Hope E4 TECH3 Disc Brake combo provides all the stopping power you need for any situation. Downhill, Cross-Country, All-Mountain—Hope has you covered.

One of the most convenient features of the Hope TECH3 lever is how it integrates with the handlebars. The TECH3 lever features a split clamp design, making it easy to install or remove without having to remove anything else from your bars. Hope takes convenience and simplicity of cockpit organization a step further by designing the TECH3 lever to be directly compatible with any Shimano I-Spec type shifter. For riders who prefer SRAM shifters, a simple direct mount adapter is available.

The one piece E4 caliper is CNC machined from a solid billet of 2014 T6 aircraft spec aluminium alloy and uses four identical 16mm phenolic pistons which gives more usable power to the brake all while maintaining Hope's signature brake feel.

  • 'On the fly' BPC (bite point control) and Reach adjustment
  • Direct compatibility with Shimano I-Spec shifter
  • Direct mount adapter available for SRAM shifters
  • 5% power increase over TECH Evo master cylinder
  • New piston dust cover design
  • New reservoir diaphragm design
  • CNC machined in Barnoldswick, England
  • 9.74 caliper with all mount options

Excellent brakes for trail and light DH
Bought in April 2014, and still going strong. Used it on DH and regular trails in dry, wet and freezing -25 C. No grabby feel like Shimano Saint. Modulation is excellent, have not been thrown over the bar yet. Enough power for one finger braking. Had a case of stuck piston a few months ago, solved by simply cleaning the piston with silicone spray as suggested by Hope rep. Bleeding has been very easy and fast.
Only negative thing is, super hard to get pads in Canada. OEM pads are super pricey at Jenson and are only available in semi-metallic and sintered. EBC and Galfer Hope pads are not sold in US or Canada. It would be really helpful if Jenson sold some aftermarket pads for Tech 3 E4.
Also, Mono M4 and E4 pads may look similar in picture, but they are not the same. Mono M4 pads are smaller.

PROS: Attractive Design, Excellent Modulation, Durable, Easy To Install

CONS: Few Aftermarket Options, Pads Are Hard To Find

BEST USES: Mountain Biking, Upgrade, Racing

Way better than expected
Was looking at these and the XTR. My wife has the XTR and I wanted to try these. All I can say is WOW. Much better modulation than the XTR. Bleeding these brakes is so easy, I wish they were all this easy.

PROS: Powerfull Well Made, Easy To Install, Attractive Design

Very nice brakes and easy to work on
I've run the E4 for about a year and have had zero issues to date. They are strong, very strong, but not over grabby. I use one finger braking mostly and can easily modulate them. I haven't had any fade. It's important to bed the pads before you hit the trails. VERY important! This was my 3rd set for my 3rd bike in my stable. I skipped bedding on the rear of my second set and they were basically eye candy. I did a little "stuff" to bring everything back to new and took the time to bed them, perfect. They do make some noise when they first get wet, but they work and the sound goes away. I am using floating rotors and organic pads. I have used the semi-metallic pads, but I prefer the organic pads it comes with. I think they are better all-arounder pads

I have had to shorten lines and I hit a tree once and had a line loosen and suck in air. Both times the bleeding went easy as could be. I do have other sets of the Tech line (Tech 2, Tech 2 EVO, Tech 3 X2) and have had very few issues with them. Never had to bleed them or had any issues with power or performance.

The rear brake comes with a very long brake line. I cut the last 2 down 4" and it's almost still too long, but maybe one day they will be on a frame that requires a bit longer line. They are that good that I don't see a reason to buy new ones if I get a new frame or start a new build.

Should have done this before now.
I bought the Hope Tech / E4's to replace the Elixir 5's that came on my Stumpy Evo. I'm still scubing them in but there is way, way more feel! There's probably more finger strength needed (not huge and I'm still breaking in the new pads) but it's a good feeling. The Hope brakes seem to have more of a motorcycle feel and that suits me. I have played with the Tech 3 brake lever adjustments and those are pretty awesome. The levers are super adjustable to suit anyone's style. The adaptors for SRAM shifters are a nice add on and clean up the bars a bit. The X2's would have probably fit my ride style better but there was only $15 between the X2's and the E4's! GET THESE! Don't forget to order the adaptor if you're replacing brakes with the CPS mounting system. (Elixir)

Excellent quality
Bought a Hope Tech 3 E4 front brake to replace the old Avid brake that came with the bike. Huge improvement, and matches my older Hope Tech EVO V2 rear brakes performance and looks!
These are the kind of brakes you take with you from bike to bike

Best in class for servicing AND stopping
My favorite thing about the Hope brakes is the ability to bleed them and rebuild them at home.
Needless to say, they stop like no other brake out there, and the bite adjust and lever adjust allow you to get the exact modulation you want when you want it.
I have them on my V10, 203 front and rear.

Best Brakes I've ever run
These things are bomb proof. I've smashed them on rocks and they just keep going. Modulation is AWESOME, and I love being able to tool-less adjust my reach and bite. It makes bike setup so much easier.

Bleeding is a bit of a PITA, but not like the XT's I used to run. They do use DOT 5 oil which is also a PITA. Issues with the bleeding were just with the reservoir cap doing a good job of finding a way to keep air inside.

I did have my bleed nipple unscrew at one point, but a quick bleed and screwing it in resolved that pretty quickly.

Would be cool if I could buy different color combos on Jenson.

Works for me.
I put these on my downhill bike. They work great for me. I'm not a gonzo rider though.

How long are the hose that come with the standard hose front and rear brakes?
Robert on Sep 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not sure exactly how long but they were plenty long enough to mount up easily on my 2016 Stumpy FS. I have the carbon frame and it easily routed through internally to the rear brake. No issues with the lines what so ever.
What is the exactly weight, Hope web page declare around 300 gr but Jenson 400 gr, why the difference?

Are the brakes pre-bled ? Or do they need a bleed before using ?
Maxime L on Jul 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: They come pre bled. If you have to adjust the hose length then of course bleeding will be in order. If you purchase the braided hose models and must cut down the length it is best to slide the Ferrell olive down the hose prior to cutting. Bleeding is simple and requires no special tools. Hope has good videos on YouTube.
Does it come with the SRAM shifter mounting adapters?
MICHAEL R on Jul 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, the SRAM adapters are not included. At the time I purchased my Hope brakes, Jenson did not sell the adapters either. I got them elsewhere. The adapters are worth it!
