I bought a set of these brakes to replace a set of Hayes Stroker Trails. WOW, they are awesome! Installation was easy. When bleeding the brakes, you don't have to worry about the oil eating the paint if you spill a drop. When you pair the brakes with the Ice Tech rotors, they are almost impossible to overheat. The only gripe I have is that replacement pads are expensive. Especially the ones with the heat fin.

The brakes are great but if you take a spill the levers snap off like twigs. The levers get thin at the bend and that is where it snaps. I order 2 more lever assemblies but they are all on back order so I am assuming this is common issue. I would recommend XT brake levers and Zee quad piston unit

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

I haven't had a chance to test these brakes out, but I will do so this weekend once my bike build is complete, but out of the box these brakes appear to be good quality especially for the price point, and has alot of the same features as the higher end Saint brake . My only complaint is the brakes do not have tool less adjustment on the levers, but other than that I'm pretty satisfied

Cons

  • Must Bleed After Install

Best Uses

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

These were easy to install. The brakes must be bled because Shimano guys that test these are checking a box. Besides, get used to bleeding brakes to keep them in top working order (no sponginess).

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

Bought these brakes for front and rear on a recent bike build and I couldn't be happier with them. They were easy to bleed (after cutting cable length) Certainly helps by bleeding them OFF the bike before you fit them. Once bled they have amazing stopping power for the price and they look really nice. They also came with the ice-tech pads included and not the cheaper standard pads. Great value indeed. As usual JensonUSA made the purchase very easy and headache free....

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

The handle on the brakes are good for one or two finger. Also, it doesn't require lot of pressure to lock the brakes which I like. Which instead of cutter pin to hold the brakes they would of use bolt like the saints.

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

Im impressed by the silent braking, coming from Avids. The lever is comfortable and its asthetically pleasing. It seems bulky, but it IS a DH specific brake. I'm using it for trail riding. I'm defenitely riding faster because of the confidence of good brakes to manage speed.

        Cons

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

Being my first Shimano brakes I've owned I was quite skeptical about them since, I grew so accustomed to Sram style brakes. I wasn't sure how the modulation would be I knew they were going to have greater stopping capabilities but, how much? After riding these brakes in all different weather conditions they didn't lack confidence. Mocked up with the Ice tech rotors and a Sram centerline they were quiet, subtle, and didn't lack in braking whether water or mud got in them. This also is also applied towards dusty dry conditions as well. In addition, the brake pads last as long as any other pads I've owned. This will also obviously correspond to what riding you do as well.
Riding only Enduro, DH, bike park style the modulation stayed consistent, they're lever feel at first is very progressive and linear if you're feathering them. However, when you need them most they resemble a Sram brake on how they are on or off which I like and am most accustomed too.
The lever itself has good ergonomics and I like the dimpling they incorporated in the lever itself for added grip. They are a little bit on the short side for length than what I'm used to but, I gradually grew into them.
Bleeding the brakes are straight forward as everyone has said and I like the fact that its mineral oil not damaging any paint on the bike. The Hydraulic line is long but, shortening them is an easy process to make it just right for your bike.
Overall, these brakes have performed great in any situation either on a muddy DH race or a day on singletrack and I got them on sale so you can't beat that.

            Shimano Zee. 5 Stars

            By babyjakes

            from Utah

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

Very tough, powerful quad piston brakes. Makes braking over the course of long, steep descents much easier with the power these brakes provide from a relaxed lever pull. easy to bleed and an amazing price. far more powerful than XTs, and way cheaper and offer the same trail performance as Saints.
