I like the ZEE brake. good price from jenson. I am using for dh . The cable was a bit long for my bike. I have a medium. The factory bleed was a bit mushy. With a better bleed these hook up and stop you.

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

After installing Saints on my first two Enduro bikes, and on my current DH bike, I decided to save some money and buy the Zees for my current All Mountain/Enduro bike.
They're basically Saints, but without the tool-free reach adjust, and contact adjustment that doesn't exist on the Saints either, despite there being a adjustment screw(with loc-tite on it..go figure).
I paid $600 for the Saints with rotors, and paid a little less than $400 for the Zee's with the same rotors(Ice Tech). It's a fricken no-brainer, and I wish I would've bought Zee's instead of my other Saints.

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

I bought a set of these brakes to replace a set of Hayes Stroker Trails. WOW, they are awesome! Installation was easy. When bleeding the brakes, you don't have to worry about the oil eating the paint if you spill a drop. When you pair the brakes with the Ice Tech rotors, they are almost impossible to overheat. The only gripe I have is that replacement pads are expensive. Especially the ones with the heat fin.

Great brake and a great price, pretty much as good as a saint. Out of the box bleed is pretty weak (my front was stronger than my back) but a proper bleed will fix that. Overall good brake

I bought these to replace Avid Code 5 brakes that came on my Kona Operator. These have a smoother lever pull and once broken in are very predictable and give me that added level of confidence. Unless you want to spend the extra to run Saint's, these are just as good IMO.

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

Very pleased with ease of installation. Was able to shorten the rear hose and rout it internally without the need re-bleed the brakes, after watching a quick how-to video from Shimano.

I am 190lb very agressive XC racer, who dabbles in Enduro and Super-D style events on a 29er hardtail at the expert level.
I was willing to give up a slight weight penalty over the XT's for the abundant quad piston power of downhill brakes. Maybe overkill for my application, but so far I love the worry free stopping power, and quiet operation.

It did take a little time to get used to the power, as I found myself inadvertantly locking up a wheel from time to time as this was never really an option before coming from Magura MT-S.

I also found myself wishing the ZEE's had the tool free reach adjust found on the more expensive models, as the pad engagement and lever travel seemed to change (reduce) during use becoming almost too firm during decents.

These brakes are awesome. They have plenty of stopping power, but are not sticky as I thought they might be. Easy to apply light, smooth breaking, but if you grab a handful hang on, because they will stop you VERY quickly.

Comments about Shimano Zee BR-M640 Disc Brake:

I recently installed my Zee's on my Santa Cruz Bullit. As mine is an older frame I stayed with the 160mm (6") rotor on the rear and went with the 203 mm (8") rotor on the front. This was the same combo I was previously running and installation was a breeze because Hayes(old brakes) runs the same adapters as Shimano. Unfortunately, my frame is a medium and the 1000/1700 mm length hoses are probably cut for large frames so getting the houses shortened was necessary. Not the end of the world though because the "pre-bled" status from the factory is not the best bleed job (no offence shimano).

Fast forward to my first day of downhill riding in Whistler, BC, Canada and as I'm bombing down Freight Train my back brake goes squishy. Fortunately it wasn't an uber technical section and I stopped myself on the front brake. Looked at the rear calliper to see the pads had fallen out! I've been riding BC trails since the very first RM Fusion, never once have I had a disc brake pad just fall out. Collected the pads from the trail and returned to the shop in Whistler where the cable shortening and bleed was done and they re-installed the pads. The mechanic told me that they had seen this a bit when using the threaded cotter pin provided by Shimano rather than the pinch pin, which you can bend the ends of to prevent them from backing out.

Bottom line, there is no way for me to tell whether the tech was telling me the full truth and these threaded cotter pins are problematic or they just didn't install it properly after the bleed. In defence of the shop, it happened late in the day and it was wicked hot, conditions that support the theory that it's a design issue rather than sloppy mechanic work.

Performance wise though...Awesome! A noticeable improvement from my Hayes Strokers.

            Happy Trails,
