Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 C Wheelset

Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 C WTS

In a perfect world you’d be able to grace your bike with a set of wheels that are lightweight, aerodynamic, stiff, easy to maintain, and can stop on a dime. Well, we may not live in a perfect world, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have the perfect wheel. Mavic has brought us the Cosmic Carbone 40 which utilizes TgMAX (Maximum Glass Transition Temperature) technology to provide consistent and efficient braking no matter the conditions. TgMAX consist of laying up several types of technological resins, then fixing them using a proprietary heat treatment process to achieve the highest possible resistance to braking heat. The TgMAX technology paired with the aluminum channel in the center which dissipates heat, offer a wheel with the best stopping power ever produced by Mavic.

You might be wondering why we’ve talked up the stopping power before we’ve mentioned anything else. That’s because these wheels are fast, meaning optimal braking performance is vital! The Cosmic Carbone gets its speed from the 40mm wind tunnel optimized profile, extra light carbon rims fitted with 190g Yksion Pro clincher tire, and carbon/alloy hubs with aero flanges that slice through the wind for unrivaled aerodynamics. Now, it isn’t uncommon for deeper profiled carbon wheels which excel in aerodynamics, to compromise on weight. This is not the case with the Cosmic Carbon 40, as it weighs in at only 1545 grams for the set.

And what would a carbon wheel be if we didn’t talk about its stiff properties. Aside from the carbon profile and hubs, the Cosmic Carbon 40 includes fore drilling and integrated nipples, not only keeping everything else stiff, but making maintenance simple. Did we mention the Cosmic Carbon comes as a Wheel/ Tire system, meaning it comes with Yksion Pro Griplink tire up front and a Powerlink tire out back, which work in sync with the wheel build to provide optimum cornering confidence, speed and durability. Whether you’re all about testing your grit at the weekend crit, leaving the opposition in the pain cave on climbs, or pushing your endurance to the limit on a long distance adventure, the Mavic Cosmic Carbon is the most versatile aero wheel. Not to mention, it is one damn good-looking wheel!

    YELLOW is the New BLACK
These wheels are simply brilliant, I have ridden them all zipp, enve, Reynolds, Corima, campy and these immediately stood out in ride quality and braking performance. These are my new go to wheels! I hope a wide version is in the works in France, even if it's not I would take these over the competition any day.

    Fast, eats up vibration, pricey
Pros: Right away I noticed improvements in my speed when riding into the wind, and on flat roads in general. As these are a deep 40, I was worried about being tossed around by side winds. However, that was not the case. These bad boys gobbled up road vibration offering a controled, comfortable ride. Mavic's wheel-tire system works seamlessly to provide exceptional cornering grip and confidence. Lastly, the required yellow Mavic Swiss Stop brake pads had me stopping on a dime.

Cons: These felt a little heavier than expected, limiting it's climbing capabilities. As an Avid cyclist who doesn't race much, I'd take a friendlier priced set of lightweight climbing wheels over these.

PROS: Fast, Attractive Design, 11 Speed Friendly

    CONS: Pricey

    Hot French...Carbon?
Mavic. Yellow cars, yellow logo, yellow shoes, yellow wheels, #becausefrance. One of the most storied brands in cycling. Coincidentally, one of the most behind-the-curve brands when it comes to wheel tech, too.

However, if Mavic marketing material is to be believed, the Carbone 40 is their opening salvo for a new generation of wheels, aimed squarely at competitors like Zipp, Reynolds, ENVE, and Easton. Do they measure up? Well, kind of. The Carbones LOOK incredible. You'll receive all kinds of compliments on them. They're, in a word, stunning. They tip the scales at a reasonable weight, and the depth is in the realm of plausible. They even include Hutchinson-made tires that put the previous included rubber from Mavic to shame, actually measuring to 23mm and with durability to match. The stiffness under acceleration is quite adequate, and there's no mushy feelings leaning them into corners or throwing them from side to side on a hill.

That said, the Carbone 40s aren't for everyone. I have three gripes, first being the sharp NACA rim profile that has been around since the 90s. While it performs well in some situations, in most it's effectively a sail. After a few years riding more modern rim shapes, I was surprised to find myself wrestling a relatively shallow wheel around on descents and the flats. They were worse-behaved than the deeper MadFibers I've ridden before. Second, the braking performance was less than stellar, especially with the stock yellow pads (which were prone to howling). I swapped them out for a set of Reynolds' new cryo-blue stoppers to find performance improved, but still waffling between mediocre and poor. My third complaint is the 19mm rim profile. Weren't narrow rims and piddly tire profiles something we left behind in 2007? Unfortunately, Mavic has yet to get the memo, and you'll find your ride quality will suffer because of it.

Like the previous reviewer, I've ridden pretty much everything out there, and all in all, the Mavics are a competent offering, but not stellar. And at the end of the day, we have to face the fact that carbon clinchers exist for almost no other reason than they look fiercely good and sound cool.
