This year Mavic turns 125 (hence the name). To celebrate Mavic has poured its 125 years of expertise into a lighter, extremely limited edition version of its revered Ksyrium wheelset. The new wheel features much of the same technology as the current Ksyrium SLR. The most notable difference is the revamped rim-milling technique called ISM 4D. The ISM 3D milling technique used on current Ksyrium models, heavily mills the rims, reducing weight. The new ISM 4D takes the milling to the next level; the rim itself is milled even thinner and is left with a rounder profile, providing a rim that is not only lighter but also significantly reduces drag.
The Mavic Ksyrium 125 is a do-it-all wheel-tire system that can perform on multiple stages, whether you’re a climber, criterium expert, or pride yourself on distance and endurance. These include everything you’d want and expect in a pro level race wheel; responsive, lightweight, and durable. It starts with Mavic’s Maxtal aluminum rims that are combined with an SUP arc welding on the seam, providing unconventional strength to weight ratio and non-existent brake chatter. To increase the stiffness of the rim, Fore technology is used in place of drilling. The lower rim bridge is pushed on the inside, then threaded to enable the spoke nipples to be directly screwed in it, leaving the upper rim bridge intact. This makes the rim four times more resistant to fatigue stress and increases rim rigidity to maximize power transfer by 20%; the equivalence of steroids for rims (in terms of strength)!
Lacing the rear non drive side are the incredibly light Tracomp carbon fiber spokes that work in traction and compression to provide maximum stiffness. The high traction resistance of carbon fiber spokes greatly minimizes wheel deflection under normal loads. Under heavier loads these spokes enter into compression mode in order to keep optimum rim support, preventing any further wheel deflection. On the front wheel and the drive side of the rear, the Zicral aluminum alloy provide spokes with higher stiffness to weight ratio while being sturdier. The low inertia inter spoke (ISM) milling is like letting the mountain goat out of its cage, as it is lightweight which sensibly makes climbing easier and faster, and less inertia makes acceleration instant and effortless.
At the heart of the front wheel is a carbon hub with aluminum flanges, which gives the low weight and torsional stiffness of carbon, with a solid anchor for better spoke tension. Stability is increased in the rear hub by placing the FTS-L reinforcement between the pawl and hub body. Two stainless steel inserts add rigidness to the full aluminum hub body, providing durability and strength.
What would a set of high caliber wheels be without high braking performance? Optimum stopping power can be a race-saver just as much as the rolling speed of a wheel itself. The Mavic exclusive Exalith 2 technology for aluminum rims has be refined to provide a very high level of durability and braking performance in all weather conditions. Braking distance has been shortened by 18% in wet conditions while keeping pad-wear to a minimum. The Exalith treatment increases rim life and maintains original rim coloration. Wheelset comes with Mavic Exalith 2 brake pads to ensure quiet and high braking performance and duration.
The Ksyrium 125’s are so intently designed and uniquely detailed that Mavic has included its new Yksion Griplink front clincher tire and its Powerlink rear clincher tire, complimenting and maximizing the performance of the Ksyrium 125. The new Yksion tires feature a higher volume than the previous version. Lightweight and puncture resistant, these provided tires feature a compound with low rolling resistance and safe grip for confident cornering and superior steering control.
Wheel upgrades to a road bike can be the most significant, weight reducing, face lifting, and expensive upgrades you can make. Finding the right wheelset for your riding style, weight, intentions, bike coloration, budget and so on, can and should be research-intensive. With taking so many things into consideration as you seek the perfect wheelset, it can be a frustrating and time consuming experience that for some, may even cause insomnia. If you‘re reading this, you’re most likely in such a crisis. Take a glance at the Mavic Ksyrium 125, it just might be the wheel you’ve been looking for. Did we mention, Mavic built but only 6,000 sets?

Comments about Mavic Ksyrium 125TH Anniversary Wheelset:
Very light and stiff.
Have a set of Ksyrium SLR's and very alike.
Supposed to be slightly more aerodynamic with the increased rim height but have not had enough miles under similar conditions for this to be felt objectively.
The 25C tires look and feel wider but not any heavier.
Looking forward to putting many miles on these great looking set of wheels.
Oh, the exalith screeching I believe has subsided considerably on this model. Dunno why but just has.
