Maxxis Ikon 3C/Exo TR 26" Tire

Maxxis Ikon 3C/EXO Tubeless Ready 26” Tire

The Maxxis Ikon 3C tire is for dedicated racers looking for a dedicated race tire. Shorter knobs in the center reduce rolling resistance while the higher side knobs will provide plenty of grip while cornering those loose-over-hardpacked turns. The 3C Triple Compound Technology consists of a base layer and an outer layer. The outer layer uses two compounds that are specifically formulated to lower rolling resistance and optimize tread-wear and traction, for better performance and a longer life-span. This select model of the Ikon 3C is tubeless ready and features EXO protection which is an extremely cut-resistant and abrasion-resistant densely woven fabric that’s added to the sidewalls to greatly reduce the chance of sidewall cuts and abrasions, while remaining lightweight and flexible. As its name suggests, the Ikon represents all that is true in Cross Country mountain bike racing.

Zoom, zoom... the Ikon is fast!
Wow! this tire is fast. Knock 35 sec. of my best time on the 2.25mile trail in NC on my first lap. Probably could have gone faster but had a little to much air (30psi) for my 155 lb. body . Will go for 25-27psi next time out. This was loose over hard packed after a few heavy rains a few days earlier. Tire was really responsive and hooked up well. Think I will go with the Ardent Race 2.2 for the front. If you like fast on loose over hard pack and a pretty light tire, buy it!

Great tire...maybe it's me, but tires feels squishy ...roles nicely over pavement/grass/dirt...only downside? is the bead would not sit on mavic crossride...took it to LBS and no success... I will ride with tube for 2 weeks and reattempt tubeless setup

Light and fast rolling
Not my cup of tea for a tire. In need something more aggressive but my wife runs this front and rear on her 120mm travel full suspension and it is lightweight and fast rolling for here in az

Major sidewall puncture on first ride
The look, feel and ride of this tire was great until a sharp rock easily put a 1.5 inch gash in the sidewall on my first ride. It's hard to say if this was just a fluke. It's possible I hit the rock at just the right speed and angle such that it would have blown out any tire. That said it was pretty shocking how clean and big the gash was (it felt close to like a knife cutting butter, as if the tire had no chance). Looking at the sidewall thickness afterwards, it does seem pretty minimal. This is a race tire so to some extent I get that weight needs to be shaved whereever possible. The bummer is that this tire had such high durability ratings even for a race tire, so I was expecting more in terms of sidewall strength. This would be a 4 or 5 star tire if I could be more confident about the puncture resistance. I'm giving the same tire another shot so we'll see.

PROS: Attractive Design, Easy To Install, Lightweight

CONS: Durability

Any problem using a tube instead of tubeless with this tire?
A shopper on Jul 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am currently riding these tires in a tubeless setup. When I first rode them, I did get a flat , and had to insert a tube in order to get home--(1/2 hour ride). I had no problems with that, so would say that using a tube is will work fine. However, my experience using tubes in the Ikon(s) is limited. My experience is that it will work fine, but to be sure give Maxxis a call. They will give immediate tech support, or a call back if no one is available. On a side note these tires are great in most conditions from technical stuff like rock gardens to hard pack, Don't let the small knobs fool you --they hook up very well for a stable ride in most conditions.
