Maxxis Minion DHR II 27.5" Tire

Maxxis Minion DHR II 27.5” Tire

The Maxxis Minion DHR II welcomes the intense conditions and daunting terrain of trail riding. Borrowing the same side knob design from the Minion DHF, the Minion DHR II has widened them for more support and unrivaled cornering capacity. Where the DHF features channeled knobs for better traction, the DHR II’s ramped knobs were designed to improve acceleration and create a smooth transition when leaning the bike. The paddle-like knobs on the center tread dig in under hard braking and help keep the bike under control.

This model of the Minion DHR II is tubeless ready and features EXO protection which is an extremely cut-resistant, abrasion-resistant, densely woven fabric that’s added to the sidewalls to greatly reduce the chance of sidewall cuts and abrasions, while remaining lightweight and flexible. Pair this beast with a Minion DHF up front for the ultimate aggressive trail riding tire arrangement.

Finally, a rear tire that is predictable.
I have tried several 650b tire options, and I'm glad I gave this tire a shot. I was warned that it would be a "boat anchor" as a rear tire, but I've found the rolling resistance for our terrain to be very good. There's no "slip zone" with cornering, and it is very predictable. Braking is excellent. It shows little to no wear after a few weeks of hard riding on extremely dry and chattery trails. It's got excellent volume and smooths out the ride well.. I will absolutely purchase this tire again.

PROS: Reliable Cornering, Durable, Easy To Install, Great Braking, Hooks Up On Hills, Good Rolling Resistance

They hold up to there reputation
I didnt mount this on my wide rim . But the tire fits will on a normal size rime looks very beefy and the nobs have a square edge to them . The rubber feel very tacky and the grip is good. Everything they say about this tire is true and it works well on a normal rim

Just tons of grip. Works well up front and can be leaned over with confidence.

Great tires
This tire have tons of traction both for climbing and DH. It brakes well too, when I tap on the breaks, its like dropping a boat anchor down. The slight draw back is it does have some rolling resistant, but not too bad at all. I gave up the rolling for the extra grip and assurance.

Best tire overall tire from Maxxis
This may be the best tire that Maxxis has ever made. It is supremely predictable as both a front and rear tire, is a reasonable weight, and has good rolling properties while also having tenacious braking grip.

The carcass could be a bit more heavy duty (DoubleDown is a bit overkill for my needs), but the rubber grips pretty well in all conditions.

Great tire
Grabs and adds rider confidence. There have been comments about wear. This tire will wear faster than others. But put this up against any other soft compound tire and you will find it out performs. Softer tires bite better, but wear faster.

Easily the best rear tire I've ever ridden. Great braking control with the cornering grip of a DHF.

Don't see how a (rear) tire could be any better!
I've ridden just about every tire Maxxis has had to offer in the past 10 years and this is honestly among the best of them (at least for Socal conditions). Previous to this I was running the High Roller II and was less than impressed with tire wear (lugs shearing off), cornering, and straight line breaking, which was a huge disappointment since the original High Roller set the bar for what a rear tire should be. The Minion DHR II is everything the High Roller II is not, it is extremely predictable, corners well and transitions into drifts the same way every time, braking all around is like throwing an anchor down, rolling resistance is not noticeably greater, and while climbing there is significantly less "slippage". Pair this up with a DHF up front and there really isn't a better combo out there. I will be running these as a rear until Maxxis stops making them.

Santa Cruz specs this rear tire in the front for the 2016 5010 model. Comments on this? Anyone running this tire in the front?
Stephen on Apr 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hey Stephen,
While the R in DHR does technically stand for rear, this is basically the same shoulder knob design as the Minion DHF, but with a more aggressive center braking track. As such, it has a bit more rolling resistance than the DHF, but grips hard under braking. I've seen people run the DHR front and DHF rear so they can get the braking control up front and the better rolling in the rear. I personally run the DHF front and rear, and love the traction and rolling of that tire.
What's the difference between the models? What are the DC/3C and Wt options in the product selector?
Bob on Jun 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: WT = Wide trail (WT) casing is optimized for 35mm inner width rims
DC = Dual compound
3C = Triple compound

Can this be run on 26mm internal diameter rim?
eric l on Apr 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes this would be perfectly mated to a 26mm IW rim. Any larger, such as a 30mm IW, I'd recommend going with the WT casing.

Will the 2.3 mount on a 21.3mm Internal diameter rim?
Mtn. Gardener on Aug 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The tire should mount by it will have quite a rounded profile. I mounted mine on a 30mm ID/35mm OD and it fits really well.
Can the 2.4 WT be run on 26mm internal diameter rim?
eric l on Apr 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've been running the 2.4 WT DHR2 on a flow EX which is 25.5mm internal. In my opinion it's so close to the 2.3 in size it looks and rides just fine. I run a 2.5 WT DHF on the front, and I'd say that it works very well too, but it's getting closer to being too big a tire for that rim width. I still love it.
Will the 27.5 x 2.4 wide trail mount on a 31mm inner bead rim?
A shopper on Apr 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have 29mm and 32mm internal rim width wheel sets and this tire mounts on both.
