Thumbs up!
This is a great tire from Maxxis. If you love the Ikon but need something a little more aggressive at times, this is for you! This tire combines the Ikon and the Minion attributes.

PROS: Rolls Fast

CONS: None So Far

Grips fine, slips and rips better
I got this to replace a MAXXIS Ikon 2.35" rear tire that I'd been using for a few thousand miles, including a big chunk of the 2015 Tour Divide. The Ikon is a great tire! However, I only have one MTB, a hardtail 29er (for now) and am more into trail riding than cross country at this stage. I decided to get something a bit more aggressive, but I like the "slippery" riding that the low rolling resistance tires offer to let you drift through corners. This tire looked about right for the job.

So far I'm happy. It seems to have plenty of grip when you want to stay planted, but allows you to slide around quite easily as well. It climbs well enough, though as some other internet reviews will tell you, it does lose traction while climbing, especially on smooth rocks if you're not careful with your pedaling and weight distribution. I have it paired with a 2.3" DHF, and I love the combo so far.

I'm running these tubeless on DT Swiss EX471 rims. So far no punctures or burps. Hopefully the beefy Maxxis sidewalls along with the new "silkworm" lining on this tire will keep everything sealed up for a long time. Love Maxxis!

Maxxis Minion SS
I can tell already that the tire does well at it's intended use. I chose this over the Slaughter based on its weight and more aggressive pattern. Thus far I've noticed a couple of things. First, if it is slick out (slightly damp even) this tire seems to turn to a skating rink in corners despite the aggressive minion side tread. That being said, I have the 2.3 mounted on a 29mm inner width rim and the tire is bordering scary square in shape. This leads me to believe it may be part of the issue, AND I can tell that it isn't as fast rolling as it should be because those side knobs are engaged constantly. It has a completely different profile than the 2.3 DHF up front on the same rim. I think for summer months the tire is just fine on hard pack, but it already has me browsing for something else a few rides in.

Rolls faster than the Ikon
I replaced an 2.35 EXO Maxxspeed Ikon with the Minion SS and not only did it roll faster but also has the cornering grip and braking I was missing with the Ikon!!

FAST
Great rear tire for fast and dry conditions. Super fast rolling and hooks up reliably in the corners. The only negative is that you lose braking power with the SS center knobs, so it helps to run a front tire with square and/or medium-tall knobs and rely more on your front when you need to slam on the brakes.

It's very tough to beat the durability/lightweight/value combination of Maxxis EXO tires.

What's the difference between the silkworm and the f60?
Jason L on Apr 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: What is Silkworm Technology?

Answer

Silkworm Technology is incorporated into the casing of select tires to increase puncture resistance and decrease rolling resistance. There are two options for the Silkworm Technology: the breaker and the cap ply.

The breaker ply option protects the tire from punctures directly under the tread area. This also helps to increase rolling efficiency by providing a firm support around the circumference of the tire. You will find the breaker option in some of our Road and Cross Country line of tires.

The cap ply option provides superior protection against flats and tears by protecting the tire from bead to bead. The cap ply option is used in the RE-Fuse and our Downhill UST tires.
