Maxxis Ikon 3C Exo 29" Tire

Maxxis Ikon 3C EXO 29” Tire

The Maxxis Ikon 3C tire is for dedicated racers looking for a dedicated race tire. Shorter knobs in the center reduce rolling resistance while the higher side knobs will provide plenty of grip while cornering those loose-over-hardpacked turns. The 3C Triple Compound Technology consists of a base layer and an outer layer. The outer layer uses two compounds that are specifically formulated to lower rolling resistance and optimize tread-wear and traction, for better performance and a longer life-span. This select model of the Ikon 3C features EXO protection which is an extremely cut-resistant and abrasion-resistant densely woven fabric that’s added to the sidewalls to greatly reduce the chance of sidewall cuts and abrasions, while remaining lightweight and flexible. As its name suggests, the Ikon represents all that is true in Cross Country mountain bike racing.

  • Ideal for: Hard pack, loose, loose over hard, & medium
  • High-volume, lightweight true racing tire
  • 3C Triple Compound Technology
  • Size options: 29x2.20 or 29x2.35

Fast and durable
Fast and durable tire in the rocks of Arizona. I use it on the rear of my Single speed. Exo is very durable. Great for xc racing.

Great upfront in a 2.35"
I run this in a 2.35" and an Ardent Race 2.2" on the back. It's been a great combo.

Great XC Tire
I usually run something with a bit more bite in the front, however I decided to try a 2.35" Ikon. I went with the EXO becuase I found the non EXO get sidewall tears that tubeless sealant cannot seal. This 2.35" is a great front tire for xc, rolls fast with the right amount of grip. For dry conditions it is outstanding and really capable. In wet it is a bit variable but still sufficient grip for me. Recently used it in a wet xc race and it was great. The 2.35" required the soapy water trick to get it setup tubeless, whereas the 2.2" setup tubless super easily.

Awesome rear tire
I use this as a rear tire on the trails of southwest Virginia, and it has served me well. The reduced rotational weight (compared to the stock Schwalbe rapid robs that came with my bike) is really noticeable - I'm able to power through some technical sections on climbs that I previously couldn't clear. This tire has awesome rolling resistance, yet holds a line quite well. I have less than 100 miles on it, but the tire basically still looks brand new.

PROS: Light, Durable, Lightweight

CONS: Poor Wet Grip

what is 120 tpi?
R V on Dec 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: TPI = Threads per Inch. From the Maxxis website: "The number of threads that cross through one square inch of a single ply of the tire's casing. Lower TPI gives better puncture, cut and abrasion resistance but is heavier. Higher TPI conforms better to the terrain, offering a smoother, more comfortable ride while reducing the weight of the tire. Maxxis TPI ratings are the threads-per-inch of a single casing ply, as compared to some competitor TPI ratings."
Is this tire tubeless ready?
Harry b on Jul 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Maxxis tires with "TR" in the selection drop down are tubeless ready (EXO/3C/TR).
