MicroShift road levers are 100 percent compatible with Shimano and SRAM rear derailleurs and shifters, and also with MicroShift shifters and derailleurs. They are similar to shifters from the companies mentioned above, but allow the rider to shift from the drops, unlike some other shifters. With this MicroShift design, the shifting functions are separate from the brake lever, with the brake lever not moving during the shifting process. MicroShift R9 9 Speed Road Levers are available for 2x9 and 3x9 drivetrains, to accommodate two or three front rings. Get modern shifter functionality at a very wallet-friendly price. Stainless shift cables included. Note that these shifters do not have concealed cables; the shifting cables are routed externally from the levers.
I was offered an old Merlin Road frame with square tapered bottom bracket and 3-ring Campy crank in exchange for some mechanical work. Plan was to use old parts I had kept over the years from up- grades and bike retirements to put this mid 1990s bike back on the road. I used an old Shimano XTR rear derailleur and 9 speed cassette, well used Ultegra 3-ring front derailleur and lightly used chain with the existing 10-speed Campy chain rings. But for shifters I only had the front; the rear having given up years ago. After several hours searching, I concluded the cost of a new or used right shifter would be nearly the same as the pair of Microshift shifters. So elected to give the new kid on the block a try. They only have a 30-mile ride under their belt, but worked flawlessly including on a 3-mile climb of 6 to 10% grade. The rear moves precisely thru each cassette cog. The front has 4 up shift and 3 down shift positions allowing for ample feathering. Shifting is handled by two paddles on each shifter. This has been a problem for me on occasion as having only had Shimano STI shifters in the past, I tried to shift with the brake lever several times. A few more rides should fix that. Only drawbacks to me our weight and somewhat noisy mechanics, but the price makes up for that plus the option of keeping perfectly good old bikes from retirement.
Everything is good about these shifters. My only negative is that when shifting from the small chain ring in the front to the middle chain ring you always need to click it two times instead of once. I had it adjusted by a professional.
