Ibis 741 Carbon 27.5” Wheelset

To put it plainly, wider rims are superior to narrow rims. Why? Where do we begin? Wider rims dramatically increase traction, reduce rolling resistance, decrease tubeless “burping”, provide a stiffer, stronger, lighter wheel, and plenty more. Let us introduce you to the Ibis 741 Carbon Wheels; wide, lightweight, tubeless, and best of all: modestly priced.

The rims on the 741 Carbon 27.5” measure a gaping 41mm outside and 35mm inside. This is one of the widest carbon rims available before going to Fat Bike-specific 50mm rims! As the "new wide", the 741 Carbon wheels provide incredible support to the tire’s sidewall, allowing lower pressures without the tire folding over or burping. This significantly increases stability and traction, enabling faster cornering and braking, and better traction in all conditions. Lower pressures also mean lower rolling resistance.

Since impact damage is the way most carbon rims are damaged, the 741 Carbon rims are hookless to increase resilience. By eliminating the inverted “J” built into the rim walls, the rim is designed with a solid rectangle in place of the hook, allowing the rim to be much stronger in the area where impacts occur. This spreads the impact out over a larger area that is also supported by more material. After extensive testing, Ibis found a 50 – 300% improvement in impact strength than competing rims with hooks, without any detriment to tubeless performance and reliability.

Aside from the progressive rim width, the carbon fiber construction has allowed Ibis to build a 475 gram rim, which is lighter than many of the narrower, weaker, alloy rims on the market. Additionally the carbon material provides a stiffer, more responsive ride. The lack of wallowing sidewalls, and the dramatic increases in rim stiffness and contact patch area, enables a sturdier planted feel.

Each spoke hole is individually reinforced with extra carbon to achieve a stronger rim than the spokes, so the rim won’t damage if a spoke breaks. The 741 is built no-nonsense with 32 conventional spoke and standard exposed nipples. This allows tuning without special tools or dismounting the tire and rim tape. Although, using fewer spokes may have been lighter, using more spokes offers better long-term durability and the best stiffness.

Comments about Ibis Bicycles Ibis 741 Carbon 27.5" Wheelset:

While I have not put these to use for a full season yet, my initial impression is that I can corner harder and faster than any other setup I have ever ridden (including numerous DH bikes for entire seasons). These were an upgrade for my Bronson C after one season on the stock WTB/DT Swiss offering from the factory. I paired them with Onza Ibex tires, 2.4 up front and 2.25 in the rear; I run both ~ 22psi. I had my local shop install the tires, so no comment about the difficulty there. I got a deal on the 2014's because Ibis is switching to DT Swiss hubs for 2015, but the generic hubs seem to engage very quickly, and I have not had any issues with them. I am anxious to see how the rims hold up over time, and I will be posting here again in the fall.

Comments about Ibis Bicycles Ibis 741 Carbon 27.5" Wheelset:

I spec'd the wheelset for my Bronson as part of a new build.
The rims are great as far as being able to run lower tyre pressures and still giving super sharp steering and good feedback.
The biggest problem is the low quality free hub. Three pawl design is very slow to engage and after 4 months of riding the wheel has been back to the shop 3 times due to the hub semi seizing. The riding has all been summer in New Zealand so no mud or bad dust to cause the problem.
I am so brassed off with the wheelset i have now ordered Chris King hubs and Derby rims to build up.

Comments about Ibis Bicycles Ibis 741 Carbon 27.5" Wheelset:

These are my first carbon wheel set and I love them. I could immediately notice: stiffness that improved handling, reduced weight, and ability to run my Maxxis Ikon 2.35 at 20-22psi (and I am 190lbs). These are on a SC 5010 with XX1. Mostly used for technical single track and some XC racing.

Comments about Ibis Bicycles Ibis 741 Carbon 27.5" Wheelset:

Bought these to replace some beat up flow ex wheels.I like to run low tire pressure and found the stans could not go below 30 psi without burping or damaging the rim. With the 741 set I'm down to 16psi and enjoying amazing traction. They are also very stable at speed. I was surorised at the noticible weight difference, took about a pound off the bike. I'm running a magic mary up front and a hr 2 rear. Great wheel set at a much more obtainable price when compaired to other carbon sets.
