E.13 Extended Range Cog

The Extended Range Cog brings lower gears to your 1x10 drivetrain. Currently, 10-speed cassettes only go up to 36T, which is plenty for 2x or 3x setups. However, with the increasing popularity of the 1x drivetrain the need for lower gears is what’s keeping most riders from converting over to the dark side. The Extended Range Cog replaces another cog on your cassette to provide a lower 40/42T cog to help on those steep climbs. Recommended for use with a medium to long cage derailleur, the Extended Range Cog also includes an replacement B limit screw which is much longer than the standard B limit screw, to allow your derailleur to handle a large 40/42T cog.

The 40T option is only meant to be used with Shimano 34T cassettes. This is due to the fact that SRAM does not make a 34T and the shifting will be compromised with a 36T as the timing will not be correct. A medium or longer cage derailleur is recommended, however you still may need to use the included extended B limit screw.

E.13 Extended Range Cog Features:

  • Cog Material: EXA+ Aluminum
  • Thickness: 5mm
  • Compatibility: 10 speed
  • Ring Sizes: 40t, 42t Shimano – 42t SRAM
  • Weight: 70g (40t), 77g (42t)

I installed this on a Stan's Flow 29 with Hope hubs and Shimano XT 11-36 cassette. I replaced the 36 cog as recommended and also took off the 15 & 17 as I used an extra 16 cog from my road cassette. I am happy with the install but it is not as smooth as the original 11-36 config.

I have a 34t narrow wide chain ring to complete the 1x10 setup.

Don't forget to measure and adjust your chain length.

In the first month of use, it was ok but then the trail I was riding was not as steep . then I started using it on more steeper angle and technical climbing and putting more load to it. the chain will click and pop it wanted to get off the cog. no matter how much adjustments I do. one time I was loading/climbing and stood up then the chain throw off the cassette as I pedal, hit my balls on the stem. it was not fun. then I saw the flaw the E-13 42t bends on load hence the chain to come off. I wish I can return it.

Comments about e.thirteen e.13 Extended Range Cog:

Installation is easy. Indexing is easy. Shifting is smooth and silky.

On the trail, as soon as you put any kind of load on it (climbing a hill, for example) it clicks and pops and clangs as it tries to throw the chain off of itself. we suspect, based on other reviews we've seen, that the shifting ramps are to blame. Waste of money. This is not a setup issue, the chain is brand new, the cassette is brand new.. This cog just is poorly designed.

Perhaps it's is very easy to install and the gears shift perfectly on the stand, one little load on the pedals make the chain stuck on the tooth. It's like having chain such on the cassette. Me and my Dremel are spending some time to make the 40T sprocket usable.

This is flawless! I started to get a skipping noise like some of the other comments here, but to fix that you just put your B Set Screw out a little more and it'll go away. BEST INVESTMENT EVER

I have a Wolftooth and an E13 42th exetended cog. The Wolftooth works on both of my bikes. The E13 works on neither. One bike has American Classic hubs the other Sun Ringle, so the problem is not limited to a certain manufacture. The Wolftooth has lip the protrudes on the back side. This prevents the cog from rubbing against the hub. The E13 is actually depressed. Consequently, it rubs against the hub. I tried different sized spacers, but could never get the E13 to work properly. The Wolftooth worked right out of the box

I was able to get this working perfect in about 30 minutes. Once I got the med cage derailuer tuned, it now shifts smoothly in all gears 11-42.

I did not need the long limit screw for my setup. I was happy with the way this performed and bought one for my other bike too. Both are now 1 x 10 with a 11/42 cog.

Easy to install on my Mavic Crossmax Enduros. Seemed to tune fairly well on the stand, but on the trail when on the pedals, the chain jumps and skips. This cog would not keep the chain, no matter how the derailleur was tuned. I tweaked away for hours and even tried a different bb spacer arrangement to keep the chain more in line on this cog. Maybe it's my bike...maybe it's the cog. Either way, it's on the way back to Jenson.
