Niner Air 9 Frame

Niner Air 9 Frame

When Niner set out to design an aluminum version of their highly praised and World Cup tested Air 9, they didn’t settle for mediocrity when it came to the quality of alloy. Knowing that any sort of compromise in frame material would do injustice to the proven geometry, Niner shaped the Air 9 using high end hydroformed alloy that benefits from the same decade of refinement and testing as its carbon fiber siblings.

To make Niner’s most economical cross-country race-frame both lighter and faster, this upgraded version integrates Niner's hydroformed tubing throughout. More than just a chic technology marketing term, hydroforming allows Niner to shape and hinder the tubes for optimized strength and stiffness in key areas, giving the ability to create beautifully tuned frames with precise ride characteristics. Hydroforming is found in the top tube, downtube, headtube, chainstays and seatstays, equating to an overall much lighter and stiffer ride feel that promotes more precise steering and a snappier power transfer. The rigid sides of the signature downtube and top tube shapes maximize torsional stiffness, with buttery smooth ride quality achieved through the flat sections on each tube, which act like leaf springs.

The Air 9 features a tapered headtube with an integrated headset. By allowing the use of the newest generation of 1.5” tapered steerer suspension forks and integrated headset, Niner creates the stiffest front end possible – leading to amazing steering precision as you carve corners and descend with confidence. Should you find yourself mashing the “I wish I had a little bit more travel” button; like a genie in a lamp, Niner has granted that wish by designing the new Air 9 to accommodate forks with up to 120mm of travel.

Employing a Pressfit 30 standard bottom bracket, the Air 9 perfectly mates its larger aluminum down tube with the larger BB shell to further optimize power efficiency, while allowing lighter, stiffer cranksets to be used. The new version of the Air 9 features a 12 x 142 rear drop out spacing with Maxle to maximize rear triangle stiffness, and allow easier maintenance.

Aluminum Rocketship
My first Niner was an EMD 9 that I bought in a large and always felt it was too big for me at 5'11". Since that time I had purchased (and still have) a RIP 9 RDO and JET9 in medium which were perfect. When the new AIR 9 came out, I decided to try a medium to replace my large EMD. I'm very happy I made the switch.

The air 9 frame is light, very attractive in the white and green (I just wish the white part was gloss and not flat), and has the Niner fit and handling that I've always loved. The handling is very fast and snappy and the bike feels like an ultralight rocketship on twisting singletrack. This bike loves smooth singletrask, technical climbs, pretty much whatever you can throw at it. I need to remind myself that I'm riding a hardtail on chunky descents and slow things down a touch because it jsut wants to go go go.

I'm running a 120mm fork on mine and I REALLY like the feel of the bike with a longer fork up front. it feels much more capable in the rough stuff than a 100mm.

The little touches on this frame are the best. Things like the full length rear derailleur housing, rear through axle, and stealth dropper post routing make it sweet. The one thing I'm not a fan of is the press fit style bottom bracket but I did some research and found the wheels manufacturing system that threads in and connects to itself in the middle and it works like a champ with my X0 creaks and smooth spin.

I've got carbon bikes but I still love the classic aluminum hardtail. This bike puts a smile on my face every time I ride it because it just feels fast and light and pure.

Great hardtail.
I ride XC in the North-East. Lots of roots and rocks. Setup as 1x, 120mm. Handles really well and the 142x12 keeps the back end solid.

Awesome frame
Bought this frame to replace a ritchey p29er. I've had the pleasure of owning and riding several hard tails in the past few years. Had a trek marlin, GT peace 9er, Cannondale Trail SL, and the ritchey P29er. My air 9 is definitely my favorite frame, with the ritchey being a close second. It's light and stiff, and the geometry is easy to whip around. Currently have it built up as a 1x11, although it would be great to run as a single speed as well. I'm 5'10" with a 32" inseam and a medium fits me perfectly.

Light, Stiff, and priced right
I got a smoking hot deal on the frame because it was a close out. I was considering a carbon frame but decided to spend the extra money on a strong light wheel set. I would have liked internal cable routing but you can't have everything. It does have internal routing for a dropper post but I'm old school and can't see a need for it. Hopefully the pretty paint job holds up.

What is the seatpost diameter
Daniel on Oct 11, 2016
31.6 diameter for the 2016 Niner Air 9 Frame. I have this frame and it states 31.6 right on the frame box that is in my living room.
Info and specs can be found on Niner Encyclopedia. Go to Tab on BIKES and then ARCHIVE and then click on Niner Encyclopedia.
Take care.
Does this frame come with the rear maxel?
Owen on Aug 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but I had to replace the one that came with it (maxel lite) with a SRAM ultimate maxel because the lite would come loose on a ride
Hello. I'm 6'2 with long legs (36" inseam). Is the L size would be enought? Thanks.
Voodooboris on Sep 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm 6' 2" and purchased a LARGE last year, it fit's great. I'm the opposite longer torso than legs. Niner recommends a Large for riders 5' 11" - 6' 3".
Is this frame single speed compatible?
Justin on Jun 9, 2016

Unfortunately, this frame is not single speed compatible. The only two Niner single speed compatible hardtail frames are the One 9 RDO, SIR 9 (BI201B00), the ROS 9 and the ROS 9 Plus. If you're interested in ordering one of these, please feel free to give our gear advisers a call at (888) 880-3811. I hope this helps!
I would also like to know if the Headset and Seatpost Collar are included?
Z on Jul 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: just unpacked mine this afternoon. Came with the Maxle, seat collar, & integrated headset. Welds are not the greatest, but well worth the $365 I paid including shipping.
Does this frame have internal cable routing for a dropper post?
jp on Oct 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is "stealth" compatible as the cable routes internal at the base of the seat-tube.
Pardon my complete ignorance, but what wheel size does the frame accommodate?

tcolbert on Aug 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, as long as it is PF30
