Niner Air 9 RDO Frame

Niner Air 9 RDO Frame

A dedicated XC Racing animal

The Niner Air 9 RDO is a full-on XC race machine. There is no question that Niner has mastered the art of the 29er hardtail, yet they continue to evolve and refine their craft. The Air 9 RDO features fully-housed internal cable routing, new carbon layup, smaller junctions, tapered headtube, a PF30 carbon bottom bracket shell and 12x148mm rear spacing. Niner decided to go with a boost rear end because it reduces any twisting motion and allows for the use of wider/stronger built wheels.

The Air 9 RDO frame features Niner’s Race Day Optimized carbon fiber frame production process known as Carbon Compaction System. Niner’s Carbon Compaction System uses a pre-shaped Styrofoam mold encased by a bladder that the carbon is then laid around. The firm Styrofoam core provides the desired shape of the frame and a solid platform for the carbon lay. The bladder is then inflated to fully compress the carbon against the outer metal mold for accurate compaction and a smooth inside wall, producing a fruitful list of benefits. First, it sets the carbon in the exact position it should be in without any shifting from a bladder inflating after layup. Secondly, it reduces the amount of excess resin to pool inside the frame, meaning lighter weight and less wasting. Lastly, it enables the inside wall to be free of wrinkles and loose fibers, resulting in fewer potential weak spots. Bigger is still better. Keep pedaling damn it!

Combined two bikes into one
The previous gen Air 9 RDO and One 9 RDO had a baby and this is the result. This new AIr 9 RDO accommodates not just gears but also single-speed, something the previous gen did not. So Niner decided to drop the One 9 RDO, at least in name, and merge two bikes into one.

I do appreciate Niner keeping the seatpost 27.2 and not falling for the dropper post trend for this application. With the smaller seattube and slim top tube, Niner does improve the ride quality over the older RDOs. I think the updated geometry gives the rider a little more confidence when descending and is easier to handle than the One9 RDO. It just doesn't seem as fast.

Another update Niner implemented was the new Boost wheel spacing "standard". The frame easily achieves their published 2.4" tire clearance and I wouldn't be shy to try some 2.5-2.6". But change is not always good.

You see, it's been over 6 months since the frame was released and Niner still does not offer an RDO fork with Boost spacing. In addition, this new frame has a matte carbon finish. Until very recently, you could only buy RDO components with Niner's high-glass carbon finish that totally clashed with the frame. It gives the impression that Niner did not have everything in order when they released this model. Hoping we'll see a RDO boost fork (with matching finish) in 2017.

My last complaint has to do with Niner's decision to accommodate Di2. While I had a road bike with Di2, the additional frame holes needed for cable routing is atrocious. It just ruins the clean lines of this frame. It's like the ugly "Intel inside" sticker that you try to peel off from your new PC.

Overall it's a very good frame. But with trying to combine two bikes into one, I feel that it came up a little short of perfection.

Does anyone know how big of 27.5 tire will fit on this frame?
Justin p on Jan 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hey Justin,
We can't give a firm answer to this yet, as we have not had time to do this much tinkering with the newly redesigned frame. However, Niner claims a 29x2.4" tire clearance, and we have heard of others stuffing up to 2.6". Generally, this would indicate that you could probably fit a 2.8-3.0" 27.5" tire. Like I said, we cannot confirm this yet, but that would be our best guess.
