Timing the “gravel” wave to perfection, Niner launched the RLT 9 in 2013 as their first ever 700c drop-bar offering. An aluminum frame, a slack head angle, longer chain stays, a lower bottom bracket, and a broader wheelbase; it was clear that the RLT 9 is not intended to be a dedicated cross bike, but more so a do-all fun machine, respectively. The release of the RLT 9 triggered the imagination wheel to turn. Was the RLT 9 a foreshadowing into the world of drops and knobs from Niner? Like a dream come true, entered the Niner BSB 9 RDO. Amongst the pandemonium of cyclocross racing, blood, sweat, and beer (BSB) is often sacrificed as a means of triumphing the top step of the podium. No double takes needed to see that the Niner BSB 9 RDO is a born and bred cyclocross racing machine that is willing and able to deliver you there.
As the BSB 9 graces the cross scene with Niner’s beloved mountain bike heritage, it also introduces a cutting edge carbon fiber frame production process known as Carbon Compaction System. Niner’s Carbon Compaction System uses a pre-shaped Styrofoam mold encased by a bladder that the carbon is then laid around. The firm Styrofoam core provides the desired shape of the frame and a solid platform for the carbon lay. The bladder is then inflated to fully compress the carbon against the outer metal mold for accurate compaction and a smooth inside wall, producing a fruitful list of benefits. First, it sets the carbon in the exact position it should be in without any shifting from a bladder inflating after layup. Secondly, it reduces the amount of excess resin to pool inside the frame, meaning lighter weight and less wasting. Lastly, it enables the inside wall to be free of wrinkles and loose fibers, resulting in fewer potential weak spots.
The overall shape of the tubing is intensively designed to meet the demands of cyclocross racing, including the iconic art of shouldering the bike. Cross-junkies will find friendly flats, comfortable shoulder positioning and attentive placement of cables to aid in the best cyclocross technique. There are zero guides inside the front triangle, while external rear brake routing on the side of the downtube keeps everything out of the way when shouldering. Full length housing is employed on the front and rear for clean crisp shifting in the most unforgiving Winter conditions. Internal routing with a large access windows makes upkeep easy, and allows simple Di2 routing for riders with electronic shifting. When you are on the bike, the post mount rear brake helps to prevent heel strikes and brake rub, keeping you hasty and capable. Utilizing a Press Fit 30 bottom bracket, the frame features a beefier shell that seamlessly meets the thick downtube for superior power transfer, and allows the use of a lighter, stiffer crankset.
The sub-1000 gram RDO carbon layup race frame offers unfathomable amounts of stiffness for slodging through mud and kicking up fly-overs. Featuring a cross-specific geometry, including a steep head angle, the BSB 9 will see you through tight corners and sprint finishes, while the bottom bracket height is specific to crank length for better clearance on off camber course features. Niner applies their rigid carbon fork expertise into the BSB’s front end to offer the off-road ride quality that dedicated cross racers need to thrive. The BSB fork combines the tapered head tube with the 15mm front axle for unmatched front end stiffness and maneuverability. The flatter edges on the fork enhance lateral stiffness and prevent race-killing brake rub.
From its weight-saving Carbon Compaction System frame production process, to it shouldering friendly geometry, the BSB is fine tuned in every way for life between the tape, under the beer showers, and atop the podium.
