Niner BSB Ultegra Jenson Bike
Blood, Sweat, & Beers!
The BSB 9 RDO is a no-holds-barred race machine, lovingly fine-tuned in every way for the glorious life between the tape, under the beer showers, and atop the podium.
Built for maximum snap and agility, the BSB 9 is a racehorse to the highest degree. You're ready to slog it out for the top spot and this bike is built to help you win.
Niner's beloved mountain bike heritage has given birth to this long-awaited CX machine. They've put a lot of thoughtful features into making this bike as optimized as a 'cross bike can be, from rounded edges for easy shouldering to internal routing to keep your cables happy. 'Cross bikes are no strangers to abuse, and strength to weight ratio is the name of the game. Thus, Niner developed a cutting-edge carbon fiber frame production process known as Carbon Compaction System to eke every last bit of performance out of the frame. An advanced foam-core mold and air bladder compaction process results in a stronger, lighter (sub-1000g) frame with vastly reduced potential weak spots. This means this bike will last season after season through some pretty rough times.
Niner applies their rigid carbon fork expertise into the BSB's front end to offer the feedback and steering response that dedicated cross racers need. The BSB fork combines the tapered head tube with the 15mm front axle for unmatched front end stiffness and maneuverability. The flatter edges on the fork enhance lateral stiffness and prevent concentration-killing brake rub. Featuring a cross-specific geometry with a steeper head angle, the BSB will see you rapidly through tight corners and sprint finishes, while the bottom bracket height is specific to frame size for better clearance and maximal weight balance on off camber course features. That being said, it has great manners off the race course as well. You won't mind riding it anywhere and everywhere, day in, day out. It works great as an all-around or gravel bike if you're not into racing.
This custom Niner BSB Ultegra Jenson bike has been specced with a smart build that we believe offer an incredible price-to-performance ratio. The bike will arrive on your doorstep with a handpicked, race-ready component set including a Shimano Ultegra 11 speed drivetrain, with R685 hydraulic brake, mechanical shift levers, an Ultegra CX crank, a wide 11-32T cassette. Shimano hydraulic brake calipers and rotors are a huge step up in braking power and control, keeping all the stopping power right at your fingertips with excellent modulation. The Easton EA70 wheels are stiff, strong, tubeless ready, and come wrapped in Schwalbe Racing Ralph 33mm wide tires. An alloy Niner bar, stem, carbon seatpost and SDG saddle handle all the cockpit duties.

I have many bikes: 2 road, 2 mountain and now this. If I could only keep one it would be this one.
I agree that the tires and bar tape need to be swapped out. Pretty minor gripes for what you get. I never plan to race so I swapped tires to the 40 mm maxis ravagers. These make this almost full mountain bike capable but still roll on pavement well enough until you hit gravel. I also swapped to a 34T small chainring to get a couple extra teeth for off-road climbing. I wish Jensen would set up wheel sets tubeless, but I was able to seat them with my floor pump and a little persistence.
I admit I feel a little bad buying online rather than from my LBS. That said, two of the shops I've bought from in the past 5 years are no longer in business. Online shopping is just a sign of the times. The bike wasn't perfectly tuned out of the box, but it only took a few minutes to adjust derailleurs. My only other gripe is that there is a bit of cable slap in the internal routing. My life hack solution was to use electrical tape on both sides to tighten the cable inside the frame. No more slapping.
Bottom line - this is an great bike and a hell of a lot of fun. The price can't be beat either. If you're thinking about it pull the trigger.

A few things to note:
1. It is short. Short wheelbase. High BB. Needs getting used to. Use the recommended size by the chart. If you're in between sizes - take the smaller size.
2. The bike comes with a 46/36 crankset and an 11-32 cassette. That's good for flatland and moderate hills. If you live in a mountainous area (like me) I'd recommend swapping the small chainwheel from 36 to 34 (Shimano does not offer this option but it works perfectly. No further tuning required. Just get the Shimano 6800 34T chainwheel and the proper tools and swap it). You don't even need to remove the crankset from the bike. Just unscrew the four bolts, slide the chainwheels around he crank arm and slide them back in (read the dealer's manual for proper directions) and tighten it all back in.
3. I went further and swapped the stock 11-32 cassette with a SRAM PG1170 11-36 cassette to arrive at a manageable cadence on steep climbs. The cassette fits perfectly and though the stock dear derailleur (Ultegra RD-6800 GS ,medium cage) is speced to support a max of 32 teeth it handles 36 teeth with ease. You just need to fiddle with the B-tension bolt, either push it all the way in, or turn it upside down and push it from the inside out so the head of the bolt adds a bit more length. The RD-6800 can handle chain capacity of up to 37T which is just right: (36-11)+(46-34)=37. I did not even need to add a link to the stock chain as it had enough slack to accommodate the increased number of teeth.
4. The wheels may not be the lightest out there but they are strong and can take a big guy like me @ 240lb.
The mechanics at Jenson did a very nice job assembling and tuning the bike, then packing them for shipment. Unpacking and re-assembling was easy and the bike did not need additional tuning. It worked great right out of the box. Just put everything back together, Install pedals, lube the chain, put on your helmet and pedal, damn it.
I wanted to stay in the Niner family since I really like their build quality and well thought out geometry. I was between the RLT and BSB, I decided I wanted the snappier and more compact BSB.
My bike came in with a few changes to the listed build; the Racing Ralph tires are the EVO LightSkin version, and mine came with a Niner RDO stem. My only complaint with the Jenson build, almost NOTHING was lubricated. I basically took apart the entire bike to lubricate the bolts. The bottom bracket was lubricated. The only other thing I had to do was to bleed the rear brake, it had quite a bit of air. My understanding is that these are a PIA to bleed (and they are) so I understand why it came needing it to be redone. My XT hydros on my Air 9 are WAY easier to bleed. All derailleur, shifting and caliper adjustments were spot on.
I had them skip the "stock" bar tape I asked them to use a Fizik bar tape that I purchased at the same time, they did it no problem. The next thing to go will be the saddle. After about 12 miles the saddle was killing me. I will be picking up another Specialized Phenom, ASAP.
Technically, the Racing Ralph tires put on my build can be run tubeless. But you're kidding yourself if you think that's a good idea. I've learned the hard way that the Racing Ralph line is a HORRIBLE tubeless tire. The "tubeless ready" Racing Ralph tires on my Air 9 have sidewalls made of Swiss Cheese.
Overall, this is a great bike and a great build up from Jenson. The shifting and braking are spot on and predictable. Power transfer is awesome and the bike responds well to aggressive riding. Being my first rigid bike in almost two decades, I was nervous about losing my suspension. However, this bike eats up chatter and bumps like a boss, I just have to remember to choose my lines a tad more carefully.
