Niner EMD 9 Frame

The EMD 9 (Eat My Dust) might be the most affordable 29r frame available, but that doesn't mean it's not a proven high tech product. Niner started with a clean slate, choosing 7005 tubing then adding the same s-bend curves as the Air 9. This simple yet elegant design feature allows for some vertical rear wheel compliance, while maintaining drive train rigidity and efficiency. In other words it's supple and fast! To complete the frame it is then finished with same level of detail you have come to expect from Niner, including the stainless steel head badge. The head tube is reamed and faced, the bottom bracket chased and the disc tabs faced. Niner poured their heart and soul into this frame, as much as any other, and created a fun, fast and comfortable ride just for you.

Too much flex in rear triangle of XL
Love riding this bike but the XL frame rear triangle flexes side to side in turns, causing tire rub, even with a WTB Nano 2.1 tire. Already through the paint and into the metal, so am afraid the frame will fail. If you are a big rider like me (200lbs), and ride singletrack, stay away. Moving on ASAP. Too bad because niner got everything else right on this bike.

Great performance at minimal price.
I race this frame hard. I find it stable and durable. I run Kenda 2.2 Slant Six's with no clearance issues in the rear. A great all around frame for the price. Only complaint is the American paint job which may be water soluble due to EPA regulations...But you get a touch up kit...

Great Frame
I picked this up almost a year ago. It's a great frame. It's light, responsive, and really lets you attack the trails. For a hard tail that's not carbon, it offers a great ride with a great cost. I love this frame!!!

Max rear tire size is 2.15"
2016 white frame. Rear tire size at max is maybe 2.1, absolutely not the stated 2.4. The stock racing ralphs with niner wheels are 2.16" in width measured and are rubbing the frame bad. Im 170 lbs and running 27 psi. Theres not even a millimeter to spare between the tire and frame, stock.

1st niner is absolutely lying about 2.4" tires fitting. if a tire marked as 2.4" fits i can 100% promise you they don't measure 2.4" right now i have a set of OEM take off bontrager 29-1 expert tires on a 2014 emd and there is rub on the inside chainstay. this is a 2.2" tire that measures 2.18" there is maybe a popsicle stick worth of clearance on the drive side. chinastays are also a bit off center and a few guys on MTBR have noted the same thing. the drive side is tighter than the non drive side. the second issue is more of a rider preference. the chinstays are short, extremely short, so much so that not only are you very close to putting a tire in the front derailleur, it also makes the bike sketchy to climb with and at speed. the benefit is obviously that it's more nimble and masks the 29" wheels. when climbing you either shift forward ...which works in the summer, or, you pull the front end up trying to climb seated. in wet or slippery conditions that require seated climbing since the rear tire needs weight on it, you will be doing wheelies going up a hill. compared to the trek superfly or specialized stumpjumper this frame fees unrefined and a bit off. everything else is pretty solid and i love the standard 73mm bottom bracket from a service perspective. if i had to do this over again i absolutely would have bought a superfly which imo is a better frame all around.
